It's been 14 months - which way do the spacer blocks sit under the windshield and rear window glass? There's sort of a notch in them, which way does that sit?
Also, one pair is wider than the other, by not quite double. Which gets the longer and which the shorter pair? How far from the corners of the glass? |

On my '69 all four blocks are the same length, just under 1.75" long. They sit with the high side against the glass. The front blocks are approx 14.5" from the corners of the opening (measured in a straight line), and the rears are approx 4" from the corners of the opening. Hope this helps!

Yes, that helps a bunch.
I suspect I have a couple longer ones because those clowns I had reset the back glass in '05 replaced them. I later find, from 3M techs that they COULD have used urethane and spacers made just for setting glass in classic cars with urethane and done it much nicer, instead, they simply filled the channel with goo and dropped the glass in. I'm going back with butyl, especially after seeing that the NHTSA site says studies show little differences in the strength in "cars of that era" between urethane and butyl (if done correctly, of course) I had the blocks in the correct direction, I could not see any other way when I REALLY looked at it, but wanted the spacing. Thanks! Now I need to have a glass-setting party this weekend! It's not something for one person to do themselves..... Edited by billd - Jul/12/2007 at 4:04am |

Anyone in the area late Sunday or monday evening is welcome to come over and help drop the glass back in the Jav. I bought a couple suction cup/handles, have the butyl, primer, and the pinchweld is all cleaned ready to brush the primer on. The glass is even all cleaned up.

I plan to add tint to my rear window before setting it in my Javelin. I will leave a non tinted area around the edge so the glass sticks. I will probably use Butyl tape on the rear, but will go with urethane on the front. When I had the windshield replaced on my 77, they would not use the tape I had already installed due to liability

Liability? IMHO, that's a crock. The NHTSA's own site states there is no substantial difference in glass retention between butyl and urethane.
We've yet to find any law! We've searched and searched and found no reference other than the glass installers' own web sites, but no statutory reference. It would appear that you can "legally" go back to the original, or OEM, style of install. I'm sure it's not legal or advisable to use butyl where urethane was originally used. the install was successful. The tape appears to be adhered all the way around. I did work some urethane in spots where I felt "uncomfortable" but it didn't look like there were any spots where it didn't stick to the glass and it was placed firmly on the pinchweld. 2 of us lifted and placed the glass where a third "spotted" position. I've now got about 3/4 bottle of butyl pinchweld primer left over.........It was a big bottle and goes a long way! |
