I'm installing the exhaust manifolds (1968 4V 390) and replacing the old hardware.
The parts book calls for twelve 3/8-16 x 1 5/8 bolts, eight 13/32 ID, 13/16 OD, 1/8 thick washers and four 13/32 ID, 7/8 OD, 1/8 thick washers. Looked in the TSM and parts book illustration and can't find where the larger OD washers are used. I assume they are used at either ends of the manifolds, but don't know for sure. Don't know how much of a difference this makes, but there must be an engineering reason they used two different OD's. Anyone know for sure where the larger ones go?

Does the mating surface of the manifolds look the same for all 6 holes per side? I wonder if there were clearance issues on two ports that had them machine the slightly smaller OD?

Seems odd that AMC would do this. You are only talking about 1/32" per side on the washer.

Would anyone know the difference, if they were all the same size?

Thanks for the replies.
I'm not building it for show, so from that aspect the sizes didn't make a difference. If AMC took the trouble to specify different sizes, was there a technical reason?? They even called out 1/8 inch thickness, which I understand in this application. Anyway, I'll put the four larger washers on the ends. FYI, they appear under group 1.067-9, parts 4001166 for the 13/16 OD and 4001104 for the 7/8 OD. Then again 4001104 shows up in group 17.814. For whatever reason 4001166 wasn't there. The abbreviation "SS" means "Supplied for Service", NOT Stainless Steel. Again, thanks for everyone's input! Much appreciated.

Is it possible that some washers were specific to where the heat riser was installed (passenger side exhaust manifold.)? Was there a heat shield on the driver side? Maybe a little larger diameter washer was used to better secure the metal riser/shield. Just my thoughts.

I just pulled a set of manifolds from a mid '70's 401 and all the washers were the same ID/OD and were only about 0.040 thick. This engine had the later bolts with the drilled centers.

Once they went to the dog leg exhaust the washers were all the same size.
Heat shields are on both sides. They are held in place by the inner bolts. That may be the reason for the smaller washers, to compensate for the thickness of the heat shields. I thought about that as a possibility. Again, thanks for the input.
