Hi folks, So I have my suspension apart on my 68 AMX and comparing the prothane bushings for the centre of the trunnion to steering knuckle it does not appear to fit. While it appears it might fit in the trunnion with some strong persuasion, the bushing ID is .712 while the steering knuckle is .850. Not even close. Is there a sleeve on the knuckle? The diameter of the knuckle where the bearing sits is .706. The TSM does not show a separate sleeve. Did prothane send me the wrong part?
While I'm here the trunnion to control arm bushing looks good and the sleeve is still tight to the bolt. is there any reason to change this out? Don't feel like finding another surprise after pressing or burning a good part out....
Thanks

The knuckles I have here measure about 709-711. Look closely at yours. The steel sleeve from the factory bonded rubber bushing is still stuck / rusted onto your knuckle shaft.

Ahhh. That's why I had to cut the bearing off it. The rubber had just deteriorated to crud as the car has been sitting for 30+ years. I'll try the heat wrench on it and see if it will pop or yet another thing to cut off. Thanks!

John,
If not already freed up, try a pipe wrench on the sleeve. These sleeves are split, if you get the teeth of a pipe wrench at the edge of the split, it will peel off like an orange peel. You'll probably need to clean up the rust from the sleeve/knuckle joint. I've used a wire wheel and plumbing cloth to clean up the knuckle. It should fit the Prothane bushing after a good cleanup. Don't forget to use the Prothane supplied lube on the knuckle and the inside of the trunnion or you'll have the dreaded "poly squeek" suspension!

X2 on what Terry said. Also make sure your bushing kit has the steel washer that fits into the top of the Prothane bushing. The bushings are known to be too long also. Need to cut a bit off the bottom of them.

Thanks for the advise! I'll give the pipe wrench a try. I believe the kit has a smallish washer for it. I'm assuming the big trunnion washer goes on top of this.
