I have been slowly going through a 71 Javelin I picked up in the past year as a project.

The car production date is August 71, so it is at the end of the model year, so it has a 3 spoke steering wheel with back plastic rim.

I have tried different things to try to clean off what feels like a sticky material on the steering wheel, and I am beginning to wonder if the plastic is falling apart or something like that.

I would appreciate ideas on how to solve this and not destroy the steering wheel.

Thank You

I wipe the wheel with a rag dampened with lacquer thinner. I've done dozens of sticky wheels like this and never damaged one. of course, test on an inconspicuous spot first on your wheel.
"Prolly" is not a word.

This is the process I ended up using:
1. spray some "Goo Off" on a red shop rag and wiping down small sections of the wheel at a time.
2. next spray some WD40 in a different rag and wipe down the same section of the wheel I just did with
the "Goo Off" to remove it
3. pour some "simple green" into a different rag and wipe off the same area to clean off the WD40 and
    any "Goo Off" left behind.
4. soak some clean paper towels down with clean water and wipe off the same are cleaned in steps 1-3.

yea , goo off is great but as you say got to get the goo off residue off then or it will eat up plastic and vinyl for sure and you need to get it off quick or on vinyl it will dis color first then start eating vinyl and plastic .

i had one of those gummy wheels and i was going to toss it.  then i decided to run it thru my bead blaster just to see how it would come out.. i was surprised when it took off all of the gummy stuff.

That looks nice! I have a green pair of door pull handles that have a bit of stick going on good to know I can paint them.

If you scroll down the page of the thread below you'll see what I did with an ugly old 3-spoke sport wheel that had been sitting outside.  Mine had cracks, so painting wouldn't have been enough.  I sprayed it with Rustoleum "Leak Seal", a rubber-like coating similar to the "as Seen on TV" Flex Seal stuff.  I then painted it with SEM Color Coat.  I've been using it for five years now and it still looks great.  Did have to touch up the paint once about two years ago.
