Late model Blazer roof mounted 3rd brake light. Wired to my 62 Classic SW. Wires run inside under headliner and down rear pillar to taillight. Nick |

Great idea and one that I've thought about for awhile. Looks and reads like a clean installation!

The hardest part was getting the wire inside the car. There is some interior metal work and I have fat fingers. LOL

I mounted one of those to the inside of the glass using double sided tape.

I wanted to hook up a "temporary" light (for driving/safety purposes), but figured I'd have to wire it to the rear lights or do what you did. Then, there's the issue of how to "temporarily mount" the light to the car--maybe a strong magnet might work, hopefully w/o scratching the paint.....

You guys/gals running wires for the 3rd brake light to the rear lights are you using a "black box" to make it work.
I ask because you cant hook it up to either side rear light(s) with out the box as it will blink with the turn sig. and back feed thru to the other side. You need to run a wire back to the brake light switch before the turn sig switch. BTW I have run a wire back to my brake light switch on my project for a 3rd light. I don't know if it will be mounted top of rear glass or spoiler like newer cars but that takes a lot more work. Dave ---- Dave ---- |

Great point Dave.
Your 3rd brake light works through the multi function switch in newer autos , cot out the blinker back feeding .

So, who makes this "multifunction" switch and how does the third brake light route into/out of the switch?

J.C. Whitney used to sell a logic circuit to be used with 3rd brake lights. I have no idea if they still do.

http://pacerperformance.com/products-footer/3rd-brake-light-logic-module One connection goes to the left brake light, one to the right, and one to the third brake light. Totally Wired sells the light with the module. http://totallywiredinc.com/home/product-overview/287/16/automotive-product-categories/accessories/universal-3rd-brake-lamp-with-stop-logic-module-detail On the older cars the simplest way is running a wire from the output side of the brake switch to the third brake light. Many of the generic replacement wiring harnesses have the extra wire tapped in at the brake switch connector right out of the box. Edited by pit crew - Mar/11/2015 at 5:39am |
