    Posted: Mar/18/2008 at 1:05am
Hi Gang:

My 1968 AMX 390 came to me with a typical 1968 central gauge cluster. This is the one with the Speedo on the Left and the Temp, Gas Gauge on the right (along with the Oil Pressure and Amp Warning Lights).

When I purchased the car there were quite a few nice NOS parts in the trunk and back seat that the original owner had amassed.  One of these is a 1969 central gauge cluster with the Speedo on the left and the larger Tachometer on the right.

The 1969 cluster has a certain appeal to me as the tach is in the "correct" position.  The 1968 has the smaller and separate tachomenter (which is smaller) to the left of the Speedo.

Is there any reason, other than authenticity, that I cannot pull my 1968 cluster and replace it with the 1969 cluster?  The round pin outs that connect to the central board of each seem to match.  And the feed wires from my current tach could be extended rather easily to reach the 1969 cluster tach.

Has anyone attempted this instrument cluster swap?  If so I would like to know any hints and kinks that were employed to make the swap work.

Thanks In Advance as Always...

I don't know if the 68 and 69 pin-out on the round connector are the same.  Best way would be to compare the 2 years schematics from a TSM.

I did this conversion on my Javelin and found the new cluster will plug into the existing harness and verified all the electrical connections are the same. I even took apart the odometer on the 140MPH speedo and set it to match what was on the old 120 speedo.

I put a clock in the old tach hole.

BigBad:
That is good to hear.
I was thinking of moving a Vacuum Gauge (was there such a gauge for the 1968/70 AMC AMX?  Does anyone have one?) into the spot where the old smaller tach is sitting.

I have the Ralley Pack in the center of the console with the clock (which is correct twice per day LOL) and Amp/Oil Pressure Gauge.

you can get a repro vac gauge from AMARK. You can get that clock converted to Qaurtz movement.

Hey Kirkwood!  Thanks much for the tip on Amark and the vac gauge!
As for the clock, I will leave dead dogs lie.
