Transmission possibilities are limited by you and your wallet.

Auto or manual? The T5 is an option, but the shifter won't be in the stock location unless you spend some cash on an aftermarket trans.

Would be a bolt in if you get your hands on a v8 engine crossmember.
if not >>
From what i remember....   there are two spots to mount the transmisson crossmember to the frame.
Choose the rear ones, if not some can be made by drilling and then putting nuts in the frame with a piece of wire and piece of rod welded to the nut to keep it from spinning.
Cut the 6 cyl mounts and set your drivetrain in with the mounts on the engine and the lower part of the valve cover roughly 1/2" from the closest point of the firewall. bolt the transmission and crossmember in place with a new transmission mount keeping the 1/2" clearance before tack welding the engine mounts.
Remove drivetrain the weld the mounts properly.
Re install the drivetrain in one piece OR just the engine then the trans installing the bellhousing bolts before pushing trans up into place.  For a 727 there is hardly room to get the block-bell bolts in there, but if you let the engine hang down at the rear (maybe removing the valve covers) its do-able unless you have large hands/arms.  One guy cut holes in the floorboard to get the bolts in  LOL.
Doing it this way keeps more weight behind the front wheels, unless you dont care and just want an easy install.  May heve to clearance the oil pan to fit next to the 6 cyl crossmember, i did this using a 4 cyl crossmember.

Really recommend keeping the 904 that is already there. With a 401 make sure it has the standard ratio 2.45 low, and you can upgrade with 998/999 parts. In race use the 904's seem more durable up to a certain point than the 727's because of the big drum in the 727. Most (OK many) racers prefer the 904, and put together right they are plenty strong for 5-600 hp.

727 fits fine and is a bolt in other than the driveshaft.
