I have 1973 Javelin 4 speed t-10 without a speedo cable gear . I see 23 tooth white gears for sale ( 3.56 ) but have 3.73's ,and 27 inch tall tires , will a lower gear ratio  (21 20 19 ) get me closer to my correct speed ?

M y T5 has a yellow gear on the shaft.  I put in a White gear and did not get close to actual MPH.
Previous the cable gear was yellow 18 tooth and it was way off. Smaller tooth drives faster. Which way do you need to go up or down mph?
My rear is 3.73.

68-73 amx - objective is 1,000 revolutions per mile of the speedometer cable.
27 inch free diameter rear tire, trust me, use 26 inch effective diameter due to tire squisch.
6.8067 Feet tire circumference  = 775.7 Tire revolutions per Mile
776 rev/mile times 3.73 gears = 2,894.48 revs / mile driveshaft
T10 has an 8-Tooth Gear on the Transmission Shaft ( per old notes ).
2,894 driveshaft rev/mile / 1,000 rev/mile CABLE Target = 2.984:1 Target Speedo Gear Ratio.
2.894 times 8-Tooth Trans Shaft Drive Gear =  23.152 Tooth GEAR on Speedometer Cable.
23-Tooth Speedo Cable Gear = White = TCI Part # 881004 ( in old notes )
Notes say AMC T10 uses same Cable Gear as AMC Borg Warner Automatics & later model Ford Manual Transmissions.
May I ask does this jive with other information you've found ?  Thanks, & Peace

The factory parts book lists speedometer gear teeth by tire size and gear ratio. FWIW a 73 Javelin with 3.91 gears is 22 teeth, and with 3.54 is 20 teeth. You may end up buying a few gears to get it close.

Buy the ford ones.  You can get an assortment of like 7 of them for $20 if you look enough online.  Not needed to spend $10 or more on each on.  I've always calculated the number of teeth via methods shown here and elsewhere on line,  put in the one I think is right, do a GPS check at 60 mph on the freeway and then move up one or down one tooth depending on how accurate the GPS reading vs. speedo was.  You can get almost right on this way.  If you need one that you don't have - I have multiples of many of them and would send you one for just the USPS envelope cost if I have an extra one of that number of teeth...
