I live in California and I’m looking at buying a 1976 pacer. It will be coming from Washington where the smog is not necessary for cars older than 25 years. In CA it’s anything newer than 1975, so I will need to smog this. My question is do these cars have catalytic converters or any other reason why it wouldn’t pass CA smog that I should know of? Also the car posted for 8k. Clean body and clean interior, 97000 miles. Is it a good deal? Haven’t really dipped my toes in the AMC waters as of yet.

get the TSM for this particular car.   Some federal cars in76 did not have a cat.   I have a 76 gremlin that never had one

Good answer. I looked at the '76 Data Book and the only 6 cylinder that used a catalyst was the Matador with a manual transmission. So, a '76 Pacer would not have a catalyst. It might have an AIR pump system.

If shopping for one, you want to get one as good running and rust free as possible. They are a bit hard to work on under the hood, because that big 6 is crammed into an engine bay designed for a small Wankel rotary engine.
Also, FYI, you want a Pacer with working A/C, if you plan to drive it in warm weather. All that glass means you roast without it.

Ask more Pacer questions. They are neat cars. Some things are hard to find and expensive (like Rack and Pinion steering gear). The AMC sixes are durable and easy to get parts for; so is the (Chrysler) automatic tranny.

Technical Service Manual.

My first car was a 1977 AMC Pacer X equipped w/ a 258 CID I6 with a 904 Torque command 6 and a Carter BBD 2Bbl carburetor. It was a federal car and did not have a catalytic converter from the factory, I remember it having a factory decal on the door stating “NON-CATALYST”

It did have an A.I.R. pump

So having the air pump, means that it should pass?

That’s a difficult question to answer - I’m not familiar with California emissions inspection standards, but if there’s a visual inspection then everything OEM would have to be present and operational under the hood.

For the tailpipe sniffer test, engine condition, timing, carburetor function/tuning, and the ignition system will all be factors.

The '76 should only have an AIR pump if it is a stick shift car. Automatics did not have them. I was just telling you it might have one.
I don't know how CARB sniffs the exhaust and what parameters they use, but if the car is in good running order, and hasn't been tampered with, I think there's a good chance it will pass.
