Y'all,

Since a good bit of its usage has been and will continue to be autocrossing, I'd like to install a "dead pedal" in my '79 Spirit, but that's obviously incompatible with the dimmer switch being in that spot.

Are there any turn signal assemblies that can be used for this?  Yes, I realize some rewiring will be required, which isn't of concern for me.

Thanks,
Scrappy

You may have to change the head on the column. Can't remember what year, but GM had a column stock with brights and wash that seemed to be a retrofit to the GM column. I think 85 was the year. The only thing I imagine is cruise control if equipped that may need wiring checked and rerouted. My 95 had one like that, but it was the newer bulkier column design.

I suggest a pick and pull check with 85 years of GM cars and mini vans. Bring a multimeter and a home made wiring reference to verify connections. I got by with a spanner and arms to chinese pull steering wheels off. Sort of like the heimlich of sorts, but abrupt jerks at the 9 and 3 oclock positions.

I'm not sure if you can change the head alone or not because of the extra switch mounts required I'm using an early 90's Jeep Cherokee column in mine that has that setup. Not only will it give you that but the wiper control is part of it as well. I use that switch with the OEM delay box to give me delay wipers that a Javelin didn't have. Those columns were very popular in GM cars and trucks in the 80's and 90's if my memory is still good. LOL I want to say mostly pre air bag columns.

Swapping to an 81-up Spirit/Concord/Eagle column will get you the built-in headlight dimmer switch as part of the turn signal assembly. I'm guessing you have a floor shifted car, so an Eagle column would be the best solution - and there's more of them out there to pick from.  Hope this helps.

Yes, it is indeed a floor-shift.  Yes, that helps -- I'll look out for that specific column.

I worked converting vans for wheelchair drivers.  A micro switch was fitted to the turn signal switch arm and wires run down to the foot switch.  I even put one in my Ford PU.

You could make a dead pedal with a hole or cutout and install it when you go on the track (parking lot).

Or relocate the dimmer switch.

Dunno about you but in urban areas the dimmer (erm, highbeamer) I don't find it useful. Well aimed lights seem to be enough.

Steering column work sounds like a lot of effort.

Hmm... do you recall what part number you used?

I'm the event chairman, so I don't have time to be R&Ring parts on site, and I don't want to move the dimmer under the pedals, which would be the only available spot.

I do regularly use my high beams, as I regularly go to rural and semi-rural areas.

It might sound like a lot of effort for nothing simply because the modification holds no interest for you, but I don't give up before I've fully investigated my options.

Sorry wrong term  it was a mini switch

Tne bracket was a hunk of aluminum with two holes the correct size split down the middle and a threaded hole to tighten the pieces tohether.
Or just mount the switch on the dashboard or some where convienent.
