early type transmissions were cast iron with a removable aluminum bell housing- later ones were one piece and all aluminum- if it has 70-71 heads it should say 3196291-c on them
where the flex plate meets the crankshaft in early engines was totally flat- as in if you take flexplate off, crankshaft is flat where the flexplate bolts up- later ones had a raised area where the flexplate fit onto a ridge on the end of crank shaft

Regarding the engine compartment, it doesn't take much money, only a bit of labor to clean the engine compartment with your favorite cleaner or degreaser. You can even use dish soap in the engine compartment to remove grease.

Moffman, you have a solid project car here. One that is worth some $$$ down the road. You have most of the meat and potato's to your car there. As everyone has stated, I would rebuild the motor and do it right to get you a daily driver for now. Then drive the car to see if there are any more bugs to work out. Make a list and make a plan as to how you want you car to look and drive down the road when your done. It is easy to go overboard, but take your time and do it right and you will have an awesome ride. There are alot of experienced people here on the forum who offer really great advise!!!

Any forum members in NJ that can meet up with Moffman and spend a couple of hours looking that nice Javelin over and providing some direction?
Nothing is better than meeting new folks and getting them started on the right foot with correct information and a little guidance. |

Im guessing that you have a '72 or later engine/trans. That's not a '71 style power steering pump shown in the photos.
If you're unsure of the trans type post a photo of it here or read the I.D. tag on it.

72-up crank, 72-up PS Pump, and if you look at the pic of the engine coming out, just between the grill and the upper rad support, it sure looks like the trademark bump or kickout on a TF 727 auto tranny pan.
My bet is the motor and tranny are 72 or later. |

Thanks for the replies and suggestions, pretty overwhelming. I took a few more pictures to try to identify some of the drive train. I'm gonna try and see what I can find online as for decoders but if anything more experienced has any idea please don't hesitate to drop a comment, thanks.\
Edit: Looks like the motor is a '73, the heads and valve covers both decode to '73. Edited by Moffman - Jun/14/2012 at 5:10pm |

Moved - this is a member project or rebuild..... not a restoration question as such.
Thanks.
BTW - DEFINITELY not a TF transmission, that's a Borg Warner, it's cast, it has Warner Gear Div cast in it, and the bell housing is bolted to the transmisison body, the pump is small diameter, etc.
Paint marks on the transmission make me wonder.....
3216090 heads - 1973? 360 and 401?
And the tag agrees - 1973 360 4bbl Made May 4th, 1973 if I got that right. Edited by billd - Jun/14/2012 at 5:17pm |

Thanks so you think maybe the original engine had issues and the owner tossed it for a '73 360? I can't imagine why else there would be a Borg Warner transmission in it.
