First off I want to say hello to everyone here!

My wife and I purchased our first AMC, a 1964 AMC Rambler Classic 770, this past Tuesday.
It is in decent shape.
It is a V8 287 2 door hard top coupe.
It is the turquoise (Coronado Blue?) with a white top.

We are looking forward to being members here.
My first memories of AMC are riding to school in my cousin's AMC Gremlin.
Every chance he got he would be wiping that car down with a chamois cloth!

My first question is how do I remove the front panel to replace the speedometer light bulbs?
It is totally black, no light at all.
I assume there are two bulbs back there but I could be wrong.
Not ruling out a bad switch or problem with wires either.
The headlights do come on and high and low beam both work.

Second question is are there any good manuals to instruct how to get into the various repairs of the Rambler?
This would be ideal so I do not have to bother everyone here with the most minor of repairs!

Thanks so much for any advice you can give!!
God bless!!

You really ought to invest in one of these: https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=5269593574&searchurl=ds%3D20%26kn%3D1964%2Brambler%2Bservice%2Bmanual%26sortby%3D17&cm_sp=snippet-_-srp1-_-title1

The best money you will spend on the car is the factory Technical Service Manual.

The lamps go in individually from behind. You pretty much have to lay on your back on the floor under the steering wheel and feel around. It's as ridiculous as it sounds, so that is probably why they were never changed.

Welcome!

The 63, 64 Classic and Ambassadors are arguably the best product AMC made. As advanced as any car of that time, and the remaining oddities (trunnion front end, torque tube) are very reliable and long-lived.

The '63-'64 Classic instrument panels are probably the easiest to remove.  The hardest part is reaching underneath the dash to disconnect the speedo cable. Then above the cluster their are 2 small phillips screws holding the cover.  Once the cover is off you'll see 2 fat phillips screws.  Remove them and the cluster should pull out far enough to disconnect the main harness plug.

Just getting back after several days away.

Thanks everyone for your input.
Yesterday my '64 Rambler Classic & Ambassador Technical Service Manual arrived!
Thanks for the advice on that!
It is great to hear the positive feedback on our Classic.
I always liked the AMC line and was looking originally at the Eagles.
I believe you would say the first SUV's ever produced!
But when I found the Classic and saw how awesome it looked.
Had to have it.
I will let you know how things go.

Thanks everyone!

God bless!!

Hi,

does the molding at bottom of 65 Classic 770 instrument cluster just pup out, there are 4 screws holding the top of cluster which I have removed and have disconnect the speedo cable, wondering if there are screws under the molding holding bottom of cluster?

Do not want to damage the molding at bottom and looking for advise if it needs to be removed

It should tilt out OK with the four screws removed. There's tabs that fit into slots at the bottom. It won't tilt out too far beore you run out fo slack of the connector. Be very careful unplugging it; the pins are crimped into the printed circuit on the panel, and the sockets in the round connector aren't affixed tightly. You might have to carefully poke each one up. It's a bit awkward.

Bulb changing is as far as I know done by someone laying ont he floor, feet on the headliner, half by feel. I hated disconnecting that connector, it's not meant to be on/off very many times.

Thank you for the instructions, I have been able changed all the bulbs and the voltage regulator from backside (Laying on my back as you said) .
The reason I like to remove the cluster is that the Fuel and Water gauges + the back light for the cluster do not work. I grounded both Water and Fuel wires at the sending units and it does not have any effect.
All fuses are OK and turn signal indicators and low oil pressure light are only ones that works.

any advise is greatly appreciated.

When both of those go out at once it is common to find that the instrument panel voltage regulator is deceased. Not sure if you can change that w/o removal, but maybe you can.

Thank you, I replaced the regulator by feeling the area to install but maybe its not seating right or just appears to be correct when I look at it through a mirror.  will remove the dash to insure.
