Here is the process that I used to replace the spring loaded hatch lift supports on my '76 Gremlin with gas struts:

Drill out the holes on the original metal brackets and rethread them to accept
the 5/16” ball studs required for the new gas struts.
Source: this was accomplished by using NAPA part numbers:
Ball studs # 735-1896 ($3.99 each), and
NAPA (Balkamp) Turbolift gas struts # 819-5668 ($21.99 each).
They work wonderfully! I also replaced the stock bracket star bolts with
Dorman (# 960-007) ¼” – 20 x ¾” hex flanged cap (grade 8) black bolts.

Do you think this would work on a Hornet wagon? The current struts already have 5/16 bolts on them but I'm not sure if the length or wieght capacity would be the same.
