Thanks for all the responses and advice.  Joseph Lamb helped me determine I had the incorrect ball joint which was ordered from a reputable parts supplier for AMC parts, I won't name because I have got a lot of things correct from them.  New one should arrive tomorrow.  I anticipate a far better fit, and hope to be driving this weekend.  I'll report back after my install.  This forum continues to be invaluable!

All, the ball joints from APD did the trick!  Overall, once I had the correct parts it was a difficult job to rebuild the front suspension.  I learned A LOT in the process so I am happy to help if anyone has questions doing the job.

Glad it worked out. Yeah, mistakes get made. the measure of a good business isn't the normal case, it's how they handle problems. I assume they made good and replaced the part...
