Not hard to do. Why do you need to replace them? You can get new springs from www.coilsprings.com. They will make them factory or to your specs.

While I've got up on hoist it's no problem to pull out and sandblast just would like to know how   tall there suppose to be when removed?  Am trying to Determine if they even need replacing? Retired, Don't have a Money Tree!

if you choose to replace them - Eaton Detroit Springs - makes AMC replacements including the 1972 Ambassadors, and they would be able to tell you the dimensions from the factory if you shoot them an email.

Do you have decent shocks like KYB?
Is the car bottoming out?
Coils don't usually die like leaf springs. Getting springs made usually isnt in a retired guys budget so I left out that option.

If the car sat about right and rode good I'd leave them alone. Coils are easy to boost -- either load leveler shocks or Air-Lift air bags inside the coils.

You don't need anything fancy for the Air-Lift bags -- just run valves for each on up into the fender well or trunk and check the air pressure in them occasionally like you do your tires. That might be the better way to go -- then you can adjust height and ride as needed. Not sure if they list a set for the 72 Ambassador, but no worries. You should be able to call or e-mail with the ID of the springs so they can match something up.

Coil spring Specialties (coilsprings.com) are about the same cost as springs from Eaton. They just make them to order (Easton does for low volume/specialty stuff, like AMCs) so you can tailor them if wanted. Last time I checked they were around $165 a pair. They don't list a price on their site, you have to ask for a quote.
