Find a Ford Explorer (say 1997) with an 8.8 limited slip with disc brakes.  Cut it down to the proper length and obtain another short end axle.  Reposition the perches, set the pinion angle, etc.  Easier and cheaper in the long run.  Search the Forum for past posts on the topic.

I have an early 70's Nova rearend that came out of a 65 American.  Has all newer brakes, brake lines, shocks, leaf springs, etc.  Car was wrecked but the rearend is very good and ready to install in an American.  I'm in Sandusky OH, so pick up would be required.  Feel free to call/text me at 419-606-3600.

I bought a 8.8 years ago, I disassembled the housing. I ended up selling the car it was for and  lost the side of the housing I was going to cut down. Maybe I’ll  find that someone selling that housing piece, I’m not sure. There someone near me selling an rambler American amc20 but it’s an open rear and the owner said 2.88 ratio for 650$.

The 8.8's are plentiful in most salvage yards.  Probably around $150 - $250 for a limited slip 8.8 and they have disc brakes.  $650 for a peg leg AMC 20 is pushing it unless it's fully rebuilt and ready to go.

Yea that what I was thinking too, it wasn’t rebuilt and had the original hub splined axles.

I believe FARNA  said 1992-1993 Ford ranger with 4.0 has 8.8 that is correct width.
