Figured I'd start a build thread on my 1973 Gremlin.
This was my very first car that I ever purchased. I purchased it from my Grandmother (on Dads side) when I was home on leave from the service in 1984. Didn't do a lot to it for the first couple of years. Just drove the snot out of it. Used and abused it. The things that you did when you was younger.
After about 2 years it blew a head gasket and me being the dumb kid that I was thought that the motor had blown. Time for a rebuild.
Purchased a short block and after trial and error I finally had a pretty good runner. Clifford intake, and Clifford long tube headers. Went through a couple of carbs. Had a Carter 500 cfm for a while then went to the Holley 390 and that's what's on it to this day.
Went through a couple of rebuilds on the 904 and after the last one, I had enough. I wanted a true 4 speed. Found one at a local wrecking yard that was complete, except for the shifter. This was in 1988 or 89.
The cam went flat in 1990 or 91. I was living in Western Washington at the time and my other Grandmother, (Mom's side) was kind enough to keep it in her garage. It was there for many years and very well taken care of, by her. My Uncle trailered it home for me after she passed. He wanted to purchase it, but I said no deal as this car does have some meaning to me. Raised a lot of he!! and got myself into some trouble with this car.

I will update this thread with the motor build as that's where I have started.

Motor Build...

I was going to build a 360 for it. Purchased a partial engine kit off of eBay and I am glad that I did. Had most of the parts that I needed for the heads to be rebuilt. Then I found a 401 on Craigslist. Didn't have the cash on hand, but I did have a nice set of stock wheels off of my Magnum AWD for sale. I had to drive about 3 hours to sell the wheels for the purchase price of the 401. Then drove another hour and purchased the 401 with the bucks that I got from selling the wheels. WIN-WIN!!

Drug this home almost a year ago...

Tore it down and found this...

RUSTICLES!! With some help from people here on the forums I was able to sand out most of the rust and get it completely torn down and taken to my local NAPA machine shop.
Refurbished the rods and installed ARP rod bolts. Sent the crank to Bruce Battles out of Grangeville Idaho and had the crank turned to 10/10. Once the crank was back from Bruce, I sent the whole rotating assembly to Spokane Washington and had it all balanced with in one gram. I had to have it re-balanced as I am going from an auto to a 4 speed.
We installed speed pro forged 27.5 dished pistons with moly rings. The block was also decked. Bearing are Clevitt 77 as those where original to the motor.

I've been taking my time with this as I really don't want to screw things up and have to do things twice.

Installed a Delta cam in a Comp 280ish grind. Cloyes true street double roller, NOS fuel pump eccentric and oil shredder. Timing chain cover was still in excellent shape and just cleaned it up and reused it.
Purchased a match set of dizzy gears from a forum member here as the original was rather shot and I wasn't going to take a chance with a screwed up set of gears.

The heads are a set of 993's that I once again purchased off of Craigslist for 50 bucks. They were stripped, shot peened, then new valves, valve guides, comp springs and retainers. The seats where like new so those where not replaced. The heads had been gone through once before and that was the of the reasons why I purchased these particular heads. Plus I didn't want to have to spend the extra coin on having the 502's that came with the motor machined for rollers.

Installed the heads and timing cover. Oil pump is a new melling with red spring.

Next update is paint and final assembly..

Paint....

I kicked this around for a while before I made up my mind on what color I was going to paint the block and heads and all the attaching hardware. I know that it's suppose to be poly blue, but personally I don't care for that color. I decided on a one year only color for my 401 and that was caravel blue.

Small parts got a good coat also...

After paint I installed a Romac balancer that I clear coated.

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/401romac_zpsvh5fhdmd.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

I purchased these Comp Cams roller rockers and a set of ARP studs The rockers are a 1.6 ratio. Geometry was perfect out of the box and these were fairly inexpensive as far as rollers go.

I think I could of done a little bit better, but I was afraid that I'd make a big mess out of it, so I stopped.

Edelbrock valve covers I painted to match the motor. Little tape, paper and some time...

Distributor is a Mallory dual point that I am converting to E-spark. Carb is a Holley 750 double pump. Water neck is from Robbmc and not shown is a Bulltear oil filler tube and breather cap. Still working on a few odds and ends. Fuel line from pump to carb. Spark plug wires and spark plugs.
Been working on the front brakes and front suspension. Swapping out the cross member when I drop this bad boy in, so everything is coming out and being replaced. Disc brakes are from a Matador Coupe that I parted years ago and are Kelsey Hayes.

Thanks for sharing!  Keep it up and show your work on the rest of the car. I am restoring a '74 Gremlin and will be looking for a 304/360 to put in it. Nice to have more inspiration. I have rebuilt a few motors from Ford and enjoy it. I actually enjoy all the work (after I am done with it!) on the cars. therapy I guess!

Nice job on the motor I like the personal touches you have added.

On the Mollory dist. what is this "e-spark" you talk of? Do you have a link to a web site with it and/or part number?
Years ago Mallory made a kit (no longer made) and have it in one of my dist. in a car and works great. My street car project is still running the duel point and has always fired right up. Thing is I don't know if or how long I can get points for it and thinking if I need to replace the point I would swap for electronic setup.

Thanks Guys...
I appreciate the comments!
Dave...
The e-spark is this...

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/401ignition_zpswjmzv4uj.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

I got it from Summit and the funny thing is that they no longer carry this particular part and in just a short time after I had ordered it too. I heard through the grapevine that Mallory was purchased by Accel..???
I think what I am going to do is leave the point system alone for now and when I get the motor broke in I will then convert it to the E-spark. That way I know that there will be no hick-ups. I will have to modify my 6 cyl. wiring harness anyways, and I'd feel a little bit safer knowing that the distributor is unmolested. Read through the instructions and from what I can tell, if everything isn't perfect it will fry the E-spark. And since apparently you can't seem to get them anymore, (through Summit) I'd be kind of screwed.
Here is the part number for the dizzy...

Man I had hi hopes and then you let me down
There was a post that Pertronix makes a setup that will fit the Mallory dist.
The Mallory kit in the other dist. is like the Pertronix, works off magnetic field and I like that were yours uses a light beam IIRC. I had that type in a Datsun 510 and had nothing but trouble with it. In that case I would stay with the points.

Thanks

William,
I have been following this thread and I have an honest to goodness serious question, not specifically about your Gremlin, but general Gremlin specifications.

First, I must say that I know "VERY" little about the Gremlin model, and I do not want to seem
sarcastic, but was the 401 offered as a factory option in the Gremlin?

Like I say, I know little about the Gremlin, but I always thought it was marketed as an economy model?

Thanks in advance for reply with a little Gremlin education my way.
Dickie

Hey Dickie...
The Gremlin was not offered from the factory with a 401. But Randall AMC, a dealer of Mesa Arizona did offer you one.
Here is a link...

http://gremlinx.com/randall-401-xr/

Good read and from what I have heard most if not all Gremlin 401 XR's went straight to the track. Very-very few are still around, if any at all. There was one on eBay about a month or so ago and the asking price was just 60 grand!!

Dave...
I read that the problem with the optical sensors is that they can get dirty. When they get dirt and dust on them... well you already know.
Petronix does make a electronic kit for the Mallory dist.

Here is what I found out about Mallory... it was purchased by MSD.

In January of 2015, MSD Performance purchased the ACCEL Performance Group. The MSDP Group, a global leader in vehicle aftermarket performance ignition and tuning technology, made the decision to merge the top two companies in the automotive ignition industry worldwide—MSD and Mallory. Mallory will no longer manufacture its product line after March 31st. However, MSD will produce and service Mallory distributor replacement parts such as caps, rotors, points, and nearly 100 other items.

MSD will continue to offer the Mallory fuel products by transitioning to the MSD brand of products. Additionally, MSD will offer the repair of Mallory products and will honor all existing warranties. Beginning April 1, all Customer Service or Technical calls will be routed to El Paso through our toll free number, 800-246-0270.

Kind of a big bummer...

Hi,
I think you are going to have a real terror on your hands after the bugs are worked out. I would like to comment on the red pressure relief spring in your oil pump. A while ago I built a 360, installed the red spring instead of the factory spring also. On my motors first fire up, she built over a 100 pounds pressure, blew the sealing ring off the filter. Yea, no kidding!!! Tried it again with fresh filter, same thing. I finally had to put the factory original spring back in the oil pump. All has been good since.     If this happens to you, youll know what to do.    Just saying from my experiences with this--------Bill

Played with some parts today, while I had the chance to...

This is what I started with...

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/Kelseyhayes2_zpsp5mpjvil.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/Kelseyhayes1_zpsjrvmkwx7.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">
Ground off the old ball joint rivets and got rid of those. Soaked everything well in the part washer tank. Used wire wheel to get most of the crud off. Solvent does wonders to old undercoating!
Now that everything is apart and at the sandblasting place to get all that rust and the rest of icky stuff off. Bushings have been pressed out and that was a lot of fun! Watched a youtube video using a ball joint press. Does anyone know what P.I.T.A. stand for??
Ordered Moog rubber bushings for both the upper and lower control arms. Decided to stay away from the poly bushings for them. But I did order up some poly spring perch bushings and we will see how the installation of those go.
Should have everything back from the blaster by tomorrow and get some epoxy primer on the control arms. Everything will be a chassis black.
Oh ya... these are going to be Kelsey Hayes single piston calipers.

FYI, when you press those inner LCA bushings in, make a spacer out of a piece of exhaust tubing (or whatever you can find) to insert between the sides of the LCA so they don't get bent while pressing the bushing in. In your second picture, the LCA looks like an upside down "U" when viewed from the end. You don't want to smash that "U" flat is what I'm trying to say.

Since the Gremlin was replaced  by the Spirit, the cars are pretty close. Back in the '90s I put a '79 304 with Edelbrock manifold and 500 carb in an '83 Spirit GT and the car was really fast. I also put a locker kit in the model 20 rear. So now when I stood on it it lit both tires equally. So a Gremlin with a warmed over 304 would be a very potent little machine.

Later!

I used a pair of large flat screw drivers and just jammed them in. Used the edge of the screw drivers as support so that I wouldn't crush them when I removed the old bushings and retainers. It was kind of a P.I.T.A. but it worked. Probably going to have to use something different when it comes time to push the new ones in tho...
My Mopar friend that lives down the street from my Mom, (Mom's is where everything is) suggested boxing the lower control arms. Sounds like a good idea and he's just the guy to do it too. He reminds me of that Mark Worman from Graveyard Cars. He can give you what a car came with, what options from just reading the vin tag. All of it from off the top of his head! And it doesn't matter what Mopar it is either.
Mr. Ed...

Didn't get a lot done this week.
Got a little more painting done.

Lowering plates got here this morning so into the solvent tank they went and got a quick scrub down. Then got a good coat of primer and then matte black.

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinloweringplates_zpstnnrwzn5.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Found a bell housing on craigslist last week. This bell came from an early CJ with a 304 and a T-15. I asked the seller if he could measure the depth of it and low and behold it's 8" deep! Took it down to my local NAPA machine shop and asked them to clean it up for me. Too big for my little solvent tank. He did a really nice job on cleaning it up and it was worth the 20 bucks to have them clean and bead blast it for me. Little bit of primer on it to start with.

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinloweringplates1_zps05qnikbr.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

I am going color match it to the 401.

Pulled back the skirt on the Gremlin today and took a few shots of the interior. Talk about a blast from my past!

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlininterior3_zps9pgurohf.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

And of course all the dumb stuff that I did to this poor car. At the time it was a cool place to mount my amp and equalizer. I am going to replace the whole dash with one that I was able to salvage from a Hornet about 8 years ago.
This is just the gages and if you can read the miles it was crushed at only 50,XXX!!

Yes, they were chromed and then painted. Get a hold of kirkwood. I seem to remember that he found a place that could do the vacuum chrome when he was restoring his Gremlin.

Thanks Ken...
I was under the impression that the pieces where plated before painting but I wasn't too sure.
The chrome on these dash pieces is still in really good shape. There's no pitting or peeling that I've found so far. What I was thinking of doing is taping off the chrome and lightly sanding the painted area's and repainting. It maybe a little bit more work on my end of the stick, but I can't afford to have the pieces re-plated. And that green to me, is not my favorite.

I have painted a few and it is not too bad to mask off the chrome. I have had a few where the masking tape has pulled the chrome so be careful. I have also added vinyl trim on some.

Thanks Ken! This one gives me a great idea! I was going to try to put a tachometer in the far right hole. I have an NOS tach. but its for a 6 cyl.

If it is the same process that was used on my Fairlane dash, It is vacuum plating. They put the parts in a drum and pull a vacuum then melt aluminum and it coats the parts which are polished then coated with UV clear coat. It looks like chrome but it isn't.

Later!

Put together the front spindles with the lowering plates this morning.
Ran into a small issue with one bolt sticking out too far.

Thank you!
Yes it is! Being my first car and all, I do have a lot of good and some not so good memories with this car. I remember the day that my Grandmother brought it home. I was 8 at the time and she gave me one of those Gremlin sweatshirts that she got when she bought the car. I wore the heck out of that thing. I don't know how many pictures my Mom has of me wearing that old worn out sweatshirt. And of course it was way too big for me, but I didn't care.
I went hunting in this car. I went fishing in this car. I partied my a$$ off in this car. I drove the snot out of it. I got stuck in the mud. I did donuts in an iced over parking lot at 2 in the morning, for over an hour! I took it to California and basically lived in it for a while.
Then there was the time that it broke down on me outside of Walla Walla. Had to have a friend come pick us up and leave it along side the road. Went back the next day and the coppers had towed it to an impound yard. We had a tow bar and it didn't work, at all. So, the next best thing was a cable, cuz that's all we had. We towed it all the way back from Walla Walla to Lewiston on a 6 foot cable. By the time we had got back into Lewiston the battery was dead from the 4 way flashers and having to have the headlights on. I don't know how many semi's I about side swiped and how many times I about rear ended the pickup towing me.
Just crazy kid stuff! And of course the drinking! 95% of the off the dumb stuff was caused from all the drinking that I used to do.
I am surprised that I am still even a live and well because of all the off the wall dumb stuff I did in and with this car.
Now look at me... I am dropping a rather wildly built 401, with a close ratio 4 speed and a twin grip rear end with 3:54 gears!!!
What the he!! is wrong with me!?!?!

Sent my spring perches off to Opentracker Racing on Monday. Since I am completely rebuilding the front end anyways, I figured what the hey.
No, not really what the hey. I did the math and yes poly and even rubber bushings are cheaper then the cost of this modification, I just couldn't justify putting rubber or poly back in.
Here is a pretty good read on how he does them and a little information about Opentracker.

Had a small amount of time yesterday to "work" on things.
I was playing around with my cross member, lower control arms and eccentric bolts.
Put it all together and something wasn't right. (which by the way is normal for me)
Anyways the left control arm didn't look right and wasn't centering itself right in the cross member. So, I dug out the TSM.
Yup... I had the bushing in backwards and when I removed it from the cross member it fell out.
So, this picture is WRONG!

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinsuspension6_zpsek61qp0i.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

The bushing on the left control arm is in backwards.
Once I got it pressed back in the RIGHT WAY everything lined up really well. And straight too!

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinsuspension10_zpsk0i5vngl.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Also got my clean gas tank from a member here. So, I have to give a great big shout out to George! THANKS AGAIN GEORGE!!

Had some time yesterday to get the rear end cleaned up and new brakes installed...

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinrear2_zpsqohdyu8p.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Little bit of straight purple power and a couple of wire brushes gave it a nice patina. Not sure if I want to paint over it or not. 20+ years ago I would of, and I would of done it in bright florescent orange.

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinrear5_zpsjq38o9jv.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

I was going to blast and paint the cover, but I think it looks just fine.

Found this too... Pretty cool...

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinrear1_zpsb4jorbsl.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Brake pieces that I needed to put these back together again came from a member here. Big shout out to Ross!! Thank you Sir!!

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinrear_zpsodkqoeqa.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Also primed the 401 with 5 quarts 10/30 and comp cams cam break in lube. Strong 60 pounds of pressure. Buttoned down the valve covers. Leaving the stockers on till the motor gets in the car and broke in.

Didn't like the look of my rear... so I painted it.

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinrearend1_zps6bh6vfip.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

More blasting and painting...

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinrearend_zpsr86iai2l.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Trying to find bushings for the rear sway bar has been kind of a nightmare, but I "think" I have something that will work.
The end link bushings are not a problem those are pretty common. But the bushing that helps hold the end link to the brackets that attach to the frame...not so much.

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinrearendlinks_zpsltkqgh2p.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

My solution is to use some Mopar B bodied spring shackle bushings. They have the same diameter as the original bushings, are just about the same length, but, the only problem with them is that the bolt hole is just a little bit too small to fit the bracket. Once I get a pair of them in my hands, (I do have one used one that I got from my Mopar friend down the road) I can drill it out.
Still waiting on "snail mail" to show up with some parts that I've got from members here. Once those show up, it will be more blasting and more painting.

Gonna have to figure something out though... I'm slowly running out of room! It's one of the main reasons I really haven't started actually "working" on the car yet. My garage is kind of small and I am not sure where all of the old parts are going to go once I start tearing into the car. Probably going to be total kaos and destruction for the first week or so. But, it is coming soon...

Been plodding along like an old plow mule on this the past couple of weeks. Been colder then a well diggers A$$ and I can easily go through a 5 pound bottle of propane trying to heat the garage up enough to blast and paint just a few parts. Plus been waiting on parts to show up too. Hope everyone had a happy Holidays.
New Year, equals new goals! I'd like to have this driving and stopping by the end of summer. IN MY DREAMS! LOL!!
Mocked up the rear end a little and installed a few new parts.

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/Gremlin%20Build/gremlinrearend4_zpsrbisko2y.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinrearend5_zps1yhwgtdi.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Fine Lines rear brake lines in stainless. Nice parts and fit very well.
Cheap raybestos rear e brake cables from Rockauto. By cheap, I mean the were cheap to buy. Not sure if I like the look of them or the hard plastic covering.
I am going to "try" to incorporate both Gremlin torque links and Spirit rear sway bar. Have 2 concerns...
One is where they mount to the frame and two is there going to be any interference between the end links and the torque links themselves.
Waiting on bushings to show up so I can mock the sway bar in. The jury will be out until I get the car in and get the old rear end out and get the new one installed. But, I imagine that some kind of bracket can be fabbed up so both might be able to function properly.
Still out on springs too. Not sure if I just want to have these springs rebuilt or purchase new ones.

Can't say that I blame you. When your working with a budget you have to do the best you can to stretch it. Checking locally about rebuilding a used set may be your best bet.

Sorry for high jacking your thread but where did you get the lower link bars? They kinda look like Caltracs but different and how do they compare with is factory style upper links?

Those are Competition Engineering (Moroso) Slide-A-Link. You can adjust the pre-load at any time with just two wrenches. Nice if you drive to and from the track. I have not worked with upper links so I can't really comment on any kind of comparison.

Since they don't have an official "AMC" version we use CEE-2094. You have to trim about 4 inches from the end of the second leaf in the spring stack at the spring eye (front) end. We also trimmed the sides of the eye bushing so we could keep the rubber bushing. If your a hard core drag racer they supply an aluminum bushing to use in the spring eye but that is just way too harsh a ride for street use. Other than that they work out great.

Found a great fit for the rear sway bar end links in the bushing department.
If anyone needs replacement bushings for their Spirit rear sway bar I found some that fit really well.
Went to poly bushings dot com and ordered a couple pairs of different sizes. The ones that I ended up using are part number 2094.
My original plan of using Mopar B body bushings were a little more then I was wanting to pay. These were like 2-3 bucks apiece.

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinrearendlinks2_zps1j0ny4fp.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

I had to trim the ends with a sharp knife, but other then that they are basically a perfect fit. You end up cutting off about 1/4"

Be real generous with that Prothane grease. You don't need creaking/groaning bushings a week after you install them. LOL

Got new rotors the other day... well actually it took over a week to get just one. But, I got them and got the NOS "Not Right" ones off and the "new right" ones installed. Went with raybestos as they were 129 apiece at Rock auto, but I got them through Amazon for 76 apiece. Thought that was a pretty good deal. New bearings and races installed and new rear seals. New refurbished caliper, new brakes and all new hardware.

After I figured out that this wasn't going to work for me and just wasn't going to work period, I did a search here for custom brake lines. Found a thread with the information that I was looking for!

New brake lines showed up the other day. Much better then "trying" to make things work. The only concern that I have is if the crush washer will seal against the caliper. Most calipers that I've seen that have banjo joints, have a machined smooth surface just for that reason. Guess we will see when I get that far.

They look much better too...

I ran into the exact same problem when switching my brakes to the single piston caliper. I got 2 rebuilt calipers and had the same problem. When looking at the original Amc calipers, the port comes out at a slight angle and the rebuilt ones looked the same as yours. Been awhile now, but what I was told another company (Chrysler?) used the same caliper- only difference is the port. You never know what you will get when you buy rebuilt parts from a chain type parts house. I ended up just rebuilding my original calipers, to keep stock lines and all

Thanks!
My problem now seems to be finding the right master cylinder for power booster. I've gone through 3 of them. Just got back from Napa and they weren't willing to order one just to see if it would fit the booster. Went to Schucks and they were wiling to order one for free just to see if it fits.
The problem is that the manual drum brake master fits the booster, but plunger in the back of the master don't fit the actuating rod in the booster. Plus the manual m/c has a larger bore then the supposedly power brake m/c. I was going to just swap out the plunger from one to the other, but the larger bore size isn't going to work.
I have to wait till morning to see if the one that I just ordered is going to work or not.
Been a very frustrating day for me... :(

Will,
You are going to win over the small things. Yes you will. You will be shaking it off, faster than you know. Wish I were somewhere near you, I would like see that gremlin of yours. I bet its going to be a real handful. Very hard to control little car.----------Bill

Thanks Bill for the positive comment. I really appreciate it! Thank you! I think what was really bothering me that day was the fact that I knew I was going to loose a close friend and a coworker.
She had kidney failure, then her heart gave out. She was on life support and her living will stated that if she couldn't live a respectable life that they were to pull the plug. They did. She was only 44 years old. She was a good friend and a great safety supervisor. She will be missed.

Ok...
Now on to the Gremlin...
Weather was nice today for more tear down. The "plan" is to remove the wiring harness so I can modify it for V-8 use. Started with the broken windshield washer tank, lines and squirters. Probably should replace it, so if anyone has a nice used one for small bodied cars, hit me up please. Also removed the wiper motor and plate. Got a mess to clean up!
Removed the grille and started on the headlight wiring harness.

Found out that I have a broken adjusting nylon on one of my headlight buckets. Probably should restore them suckers also! LOL!

Got a strut rod bracket from a forum member here so BIG SHOUT OUT TO MATT! THANKS MATT!
Wasn't the best of shape, so there was a little welding done and a little grinding. But it'll work!

http://s49.photobucket.com/user/brtherb/media/gremlinclutch_zpslgqxyo4u.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

I also kicked this around for a couple of days... This power brake booster/master cylinder drama...
Probably should of purchased a power drum master cylinder and sent back the power disc master cylinder.... Nope... hogged out the holes, adjusted the rod according to the TSM and stuck it on.

Drama over... I hope....
Now for.... where in the he!! am I going to put all these parts that I am taking off!!!

Looking very nice. Love the RobMc thermostat housing. We have used them on a number of projects including the 401 for my Hornet. I have one left as a spare but I seem to remember that RobMc was going to drop them. Too bad.

Added a few little "bling" pieces today.
Took me awhile to figure out how I was going to properly get these valve covers to seal up good.
Tried the T-bars on the lower holes and it looked like poo to me. They stuck out too far and looked.. well, like poo.
Sent those back and had to wait for everything to wash out so I could order the ARP studs that you see below.

Also used their studs for the carb..

Ordered up a new alternator and that should be here tomorrow.
Decided I am going to go with this write up here for the alternator install.

Weather has been too crappy to actually get my engine wiring harness out to make the modifications to it. Hopefully this weekend I can get it out and start on that project.

Swapped my original pulley from the old worn out alt...
Noticed that there was quite a bit of difference in the weight between the two and the casing is just a little bit bigger in length. But everything seems to match up well... \
Ordered the wrong hose for the water pump, so going to have to wait on that.
Plug wires should be here Monday and I can get those going and get timing set...
Motor is coming along nicely... but slowly..

Wires are DUI's 10mm's. Nice product from what I can tell. Have a nice nylon braid surrounding them. Everything is marked too.

Still working on and kicking the wiring harness around. Rained all weekend so no outside work on the car itself.
Still have a few small things to do with the motor itself before it will be ready for the run stand. Fuel line from pump to carb. Air cleaner, temperature sending unit and a few spark plug wire holders here and there to hold part of that rats nest together and out of the way. Still need a nice fan too.

Been awhile since I've posted anything up on this.
Funny how "life" gets in the way sometimes. Putting in a 12X25' high barn style storage shed before I even actually "start" on the car itself. I need a place to put everything that is going to come off this car. Actually cheaper to finance a storage shed a month then it is to actually rent a storage unit.
Been trying to find a V-8 wiring harness and that's been a hold up.
But in the mean time I went and dug out the steering column that I am going to use.
I think its from an early Concord or Eagle. Got it years ago off of eBay.
Was that kinda tan color..??
Little sanding.. Little paint.. Little more sanding... Little more sanding... some more paint.. *%#@!! Too much paint! More sanding...!!!

Turned out OK.. I guess...

Sure was kind of a pain in the @ss...

Next step is Wheels!! My turbo cast wheels are next up for stripping, tape and painting!

Where is your column too short at?
Down at the rag joint or elsewhere?

Yes, too short at the rag joint, probably because the eagle had a power steering box and my gremlin has a manual?

Posted By: BrotherBamc
Date Posted: May/29/2016 at 11:03am
Thats very possible.
I've measured mine several times and every thing seems kosher.
Do you have the rag joint from the Eagle to compare?
There does seem like there is a difference betwwen the two rag joints.
My Gremlin also has manual steer.

Purchased a SC/360 hood scoop from Eddie Stakes this morning.
Been kicking around the idea of trying to find a new hood for my Gremlin as through the years of my teenage and mid 20's wasn't the best for this poor little car!
Being a 6 cylinder car I had to have the big a$$ed velocity stack sticking out through the hood. So, I cut a hole in my hood! Then the velocity stack "craze" went away, I then was left with this big a$$ed hole in my hood! Needless to say, I fiber glassed a fiberglass hood scoop to cover the hood. But again, being a 6 cylinder car it was off to one side. Or that's the way that I wanted it.

I remember that I did put an awful lot of time and effort in this hood and scoop.
Portable run stand is coming together, should be able to get the 401 broke in with in a couple of weeks I am hoping.

That's going to be a wicked little machine... probably was no slouch as you had it originally either. Great old pics of the six. bring back memories when I helped build an inline 6 for a friends truck, 300hp was the goal out of an 84' ford 300cu/in (a lofty goal starting at 145hp). It wasn't quite that much when we finished but I think it was all of 250+ I still say we could have done it, had he opted for a four barrel intake and carb, and a little hotter cam, but he wanted an economical, semi-fast (competitive to the vortec v8's), bullet proof engine. Personally I don't think he saved a penny in fuel... Keep the posts coming looks like a great project! We are planning a Gremlin build as well but going to squeeze in my 413 Mopar/727 combo in it, so keep the info coming!

Well...
For this to work, as in having enough storage to keep everything in some sort of "disorder", I had to get one of these..
And it showed up yesterday just before I had to head out for work...

It's almost big enough to stick the whole car in... but not quite.
I've been paying a storage unit place now for over 10 years now. I am happy to have this and it is actually cheaper to purchase this over a few years then to keep paying a storage place.
It's 10'X24' and it looks bigger on the outside then on the inside.
Need to wire it for some lights and I wished I would of had the builder put in a window or 2.
But, for now it will have to work and I've christened it..

I had a 12x20 shed built on site. In my area it has to be on a concrete slab.

They dig for the slab and I said, "Wow, that is a huge pit!".
They poured the concrete and I said, "Wow, you could land a 747 on that pad!".
They started putting up the walls and I said, "Wow, that is as big as an aircraft hanger!".
When they finished and I walked inside for the first time I said, "Wow, I should have made it bigger!".
SIGH.....

Not a lot to report on the car itself.
Storage shed is on hold until I can get a few extra bucks saved up for some lighting needs.
BUT! In the mean time, my buddy and I have been working on a run stand.
It's not the prettiest welds nor is it the prettiest but it is very sturdy.
The next step is bracket for radiator and wiring...
Make a fuel pump block off plate too..

Very nice work. Your Gremlin is going to be one sweet little machine when your done. I noticed a few pages ago that you might need a washer fluid reservoir? I have one that I think is on excellent shape one on my 75. Need to look at it a little closer to be sure. If you're interested in it let me know. I will never use it. Windshield wipers are gone and firewall is cut up and modified. Not sure how and why the reservoir is still there but it is.

Thanks Jeremy, but I have already sourced one out.
This has been a fun ride and the journey will continue.
I was hoping to have things ready to drop in by the end of August, but it's not looking like that is going to happen.
Hard to believe that we are already in the middle of summer.
My biggest factor now is getting parts that I have been saving for years from one storage place to the next and trying to get things organized so I know where stuff is when I am going to need it.
Kind of like life! LOL!!
Thanks!

Little bit more done today!
Getting close.
Need a few more small things and we should be able to fire this beast up!
Had a problem with clutch cover bolts. We bolted up the flywheel then went to put on the clutch and cover and the bolts where bottoming out before things got settled in. Come to find out that when my machine shop bead blasted the flywheel and re-surfaced it, he didn't clean out the bolt holes. Took a bottoming tap and some air to get things cleaned up enough to get the clutch cover to sit down fully.
Just some of the small little things that I've come across.
Found out through trial and error that you get what you pay for.
I tried Mr. Gasket and those were junk. Had to order ARP and those worked out well. I imagine that if I had cleaned out the holes prior to trying to use the Mr. Gasket stuff, they'd probably of worked.
Gonna be a couple of weeks before anything else can be done to this as my buddy is going on some backpacking trip into the 7 Devils. I say "Have fun"! That's some steep a$$ country there!! LOL!!
Oh.. one more thing..
The dipstick tube that I got from one of our vendors... just wasn't or isn't right. The curve on the bottom is too tight and it wouldn't fit in the block right. The tube itself is too long and had to be trimmed about a 1/4". With a little help it was able to fit, but I don't think it's right. Going to paint up both of my NOS ones and use one of those for the final install. Just makes me wonder what re-pop stuff is and isn't right...

This was kind of a long drawn out process and kind of back yard mechanical stuff...
But it worked and works very well. We were unable to set the dwell or the timing. We had "technical" problems with fuel. First pump didn't work at all. Second pump worked for awhile. And the third pump we didn't have a regulator for it. So, when we turned it on we filled the carb in about 10 seconds!! LOL!
Next Sunday we can get things dialed in closer. My carb didn't work all that well. It needs a good clean out. We ended up using one my buddies older carbs, and we had problems with that one also. But, we were able to get it to work and ran the engine for a good 20 minutes to break in the cam.
Pressure was a good 60 pounds cold, 55 pounds at 2,500 RPM hot. Couldn't get it to idle as we had the fuel problems with the pump and both carbs.
A few oil leaks, but those were from the valve covers and the fuel pump block off plate.
Other then that, she sounds pretty good!

This picture was from when we first started this morning about 10 am.

Little more run time today.
We were able to set timing but one set of points is not firing right, so we couldn't set the dwell on that set.
Has just under 40 psi on the oil hot.
Adjusted carb and for only running on one set of points it runs very well!! I am happy!
Bringing it home in the morning...
NOW the real fun begins...

Not much to report on this at this time. It's kind of been on hold. I've been trying to get a storage unit cleaned out and put away in my "Gremlin Shed".
But!! I have been able to score a few goodies for the 401.
Set of Hooker Super Comps with big tubes and a complete nitrous oxide kit from a member here...
Friends say that this just went from crazy to absolutely insane..
Yup... "the demise of sanity".

Started on "The Dash Project" as I have officially decided to call it..
It all started with my decision to put a NOS Hornet clock in. I've had the dash for years. I salvaged it from a 72 Hornet SST 4 door. 56,000 survivor headed to the crusher about 8 or 9 years ago and it's been in storage ever since.

No before pictures of the dash itself, except for this one of the stinking screw that I couldn't get out. I wanted to take the metal frame out to clean an paint it...

No go. Pretty sure that I melted the head of the screw to the plastic trying to drill it out. So I left it in and put a few of the original screws back in to hold it in place. Fixed a few cracks that magically appeared. Cleaned it.. and cleaned it.. and cleaned it.. then cleaned it again.

Still needs a couple coats of clear, but I guess it's ok.. I still think that it looks like painted plastic.. LOL!!

From the outside looking in, I see your virtue of humbleness saying 'demise of sanity'.

But from the inside looking out, your 401 Gremlin tells me you are altogether a very keen and reasonable man!

It seems written somewhere in invisible ink that this is what AMC intended, but only whispered the message in public by making the 304 V8 optional.

Another thing I really like about these vintage AMCs is being able to fully master the wiring harness, which to me, gives a great sense of accomplishment and leaves a 'real steel' US made machine full of good ol' tough SAE nuts and bolts to wrench away on; it just doesn't get any better than this.

These cars make such great hobby cars IMO -Thanks for posting pics.
