I am attempting to install an original 1972 AMC fully retractable antenna in my 68. The base on the antenna, and several other bases I have here, which I thought came from Javelins years ago, do not seem to have enough angle on them to get the antenna sitting nice and vertical. The antenna leans outboard no matter how the base is oriented. What am I missing here?  Thanks.

Probably the wrong base. The retractable, of course was made to go in a '72 fender vs. the cowl location on your '68. I have not done that swap, so hopefully someone here can shed light on what you need. Good luck!

The original base to the antenna is a bit larger in diameter than the other 2 bases I have here.  But, the angle appears to be the same, or very close. I believe I pulled the antenna from a 72 Matador maaaany years ago.

I'm not sure you can get a retractable to work if mounted on the cowl. There's not a lot of clearance under the antenna.

Plenty of room.  Just need to figure out a base with more angle on it.

I have one of each antenna regular and retractable both are NOS for my 70, from my pictures it looks like there might be differences in base angles. I have not tried to fit either one yet maybe it requires a mix of parts? I did check the hole size it's about 1" for a stock antenna and 1-1/16" for retractable.

Apparently, it really is all about the base.

JGRANT, if you could measure the height on the high and low side of both of those bases I think that would be a big help.  Thanks!!!  Wink

Edit: Mine measure .200 difference from high to low side.      .92 vs. .72.

There are different bases.  I remember buying a NOS antenna and it had a Javelin base and a Matador? base with it.

A bit of learning here I have what I believe is an original 70 Antenna with my two antennas and it's different it has a clean cut base where the pad fits the other two have a flanged type base where the pad fits. The two new antennas were sold by a fellow classic antenna or antique auto antenna something like that he is no longer in business, the antennas were assembled as needed I believe he bought out Ward and others years ago.

The top antenna is what I believe is an original 70' Javelin/AMX.

The middle antenna I bought was listed as NOS for 70'Javelin/AMX.

The lower antenna is listed for 72' model 70 AMC #448 7069.

Top antenna base .330" to .740" retracted length = 19" base gasket about 1.55" diameter.
Middle antenna base .635" to .890" retracted length = 22" base gasket about 1.750" diameter.
Bottom antenna base .340" to .780" retracted length 1" base gasket about 1.650" diameter

Very interesting. The base on my retractable is flanged at the bottom also. But the angle is less than yours. I think I need a base with numbers like your #1 or #3. My bases are closer to your #2.  This base does not have enough angle on it to work on an AMX.

I installed the antenna on my 68. It came from Galvin's and he sent 3 different bases with it. I just used the stock 68 antenna base.
