Will the races be 1/8 mile or, 1/4 mile?

Posted By: DragRacingSpirit
Date Posted: Dec/02/2021 at 9:09pm
There web site says 1/8 and 1/4 drag racing on the track. It looks like a pretty nice place and an NHRA track. The only downer is the 6-1/2 hour pull.

1/8 is ok but prefer the 1/4 myself. Nothing better than pulling on the big end.

Crossing the line at 150 plus is just as much fun as the launch and the 60'

I plan on running 1/4 mile for every class, the heads up would be the only class that I have to decide on, and I might leave that up to the racers. I love 1/4 racing.

I am going to go this year.  I have never been to GAD. It's only 1-1/2 hours further than Cordova for me. I might not have my newest motor in yet but i can still run 9.0's all day long with my SR headed iron motor and it is a fun ride.

And of course get to meet new people and have fun bench racing, bulldunging, drinking beer (after the races are over) and hanging out.
:)

Here is all class rules for confirmed classes and the draft rules for the Heads up shootout if enough interest and or sponsorship. Also car show will happen as usual.

Bracket Racing all 1/4 mile:
AMC/Mopar - amc/Mopar body and or powered
STICK SHIFT- any vehicle welcome, must be stick and use clutch pedal to launch and manually shift gears(don't have to use clutch on shifting gears) Basically UMTR rules.
2ND CHANCE- Any first round buybacks and any non amc/Mopar or stick cars.

Heads Up Shootout (draft) :
Must be AMC/Mopar body
Any powerplant, tire etc RWYB
Can either be 1/8 or 1/4 (need racers interested in class to tell me)
Can possibly do pro tree if ok by track and racers preferred
Racer decision clocks on or off (if ok by track)
I will say atleast a 8 car field would be preferred
Entry fee(this class only) $100 winner take all plus sponsorship money. At a complete 8 car field locked in I will throw in $1000 on top atleast

Let me know on thoughts and suggestions for heads up class and interest. I know basically no other amc event does heads up stuff and I would love to do so as I love heads up racing.

Host hotel and local campground update

I'm currently in talk with Holiday inn Express (10906 NEW HAVEN ROAD HARRISON, OHIO 45030) which is about 15-20ish mins away from the track about being the host hotel. There is a super 8 across the street from this holiday inn with plenty of parking also. Also being right off the interstate, there is plenty of restaurants etc around. I will keep everyone posted if I can get a special rate worked out for everyone. Their are multiple hotels though around the track being so close to Cincinnati, Harrison Ohio etc.

Miami Whitewater forest campground is the closest to the track only being 5 mins away from it. If you plan on camping this is probably you best choice for being close track.

Young Guns class present by Alfano Performance AMC Speed Shop draft rules and gauging interest.

Rules:
- This is is intended for the younger generation class under 22 years old and will be a bracket race. This class is ment to get the younger generation out there having fun with amcs and possibly even introducing amc to a younger generation.
-Free entry for this class to all racers, so racers can run in other classes. This is one of our ways to give back and get the younger generation involved.
-Amcs only

Also included in this class will be an award for youngest driver and best reaction time(winner of class can't win best reaction time to)
Will be a few other things include for racers in this class but kinda need to see the interest of this class and possibly pre registration. Let me know what you think and what could we do to make this a awesome class for the younger generation of amcers

I just called and there is no special rate at the Holiday Inn Express.
However, I did get a much cheaper rate at the Super 8.   https://www.guestreservations.com/super-8-harrison-oh/booking" rel="nofollow - https://www.guestreservations.com/super-8-harrison-oh/booking

I plan to camp at the track on Thursday night...

Damian,
If i may suggest...
If you noticed when we hosted GAD, the 2nd chance class started 2nd round and was last class to run, That allowed 2nd round losers to have the chance to inter the class..

But remember you are in charge, not me...

I actually haven't did the host motel rate at the Holiday inn due to the lack of interest. I can for sure get that set up for everyone though. Super 8 is usually way cheaper than holiday and as alot of people have mentioned to me, camping at the track seems very popular this year. Good suggestion Mike and will mostly do it that way. Would also give everyone alittle more chance to make some passes down the track.

always a curve ball..
Didnt have much good luck with the 1050 dominator i sent to pro systems 2 years ago when the engine was first built...
i just fired it up last Saturday with the pro systems carb. let it warm up and give it a couple quick 6k blasts... the clear view screen is Clean, so i dont think the engine bent any rods when i tried to crank it up.
New Carb from IRD has been ordered and Hopefully i will get it soon enough to make a test and tune night before GAD...
either way. The POS and I will be there.

Is there any facilities at the track ? I will camp if they have a shower. I don't like to smell....lol.

I will stay Friday night for the regular track event Saturday as well if possible?

Already there, may as well.

Do they sell fuel there and what brand ?

I tried to call the track myself......no answer.

The track unfortunately doesn't have showers, and I can ask and make sure staying there Friday night for Saturday program is ok if your planning on doing that. They sale VP racing(I think) 110 and alcohol at the track and will probably say you can find a gas pump close to the track that has e85 if you run it. If you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out to me- Damian

Thanks. I can bring a camping tent/shower. I would like to camp when I get their Thursday night for GAD, Friday night for the bracket racing program they have on Saturday if they will allow it. Camp Saturday night after the bracket event is over and clear the premises to head home Sunday morning early. It would be 2 adults including me and 2 teenagers. I assume I can bring a bbq grill with me ??

Thanks

Had a Very good time @ GAD this year.

Very different on the other side of event. (as in being a attendee instead of the host).
Just had to ask the little lady today to look on her facebook account to see any chatter about GAD's.
If any of those folks that mentioned they understood Why i left Facebook, Thank you!
To Dan Curtis for calling me thin skinned....  F.U.
I voted for Trump, so i was labeled a right wing domestic terrorist, and facebook wanted to edit my post...
Im old and grumpy and will not except that kind of treatment.
So i left, plain and simple.

Great job with your first year of GAD Damian! I'm sure you learned a bunch and will only improve in the future events.
I thought the track facility was great for us, though the hot track surface was slick and tricky at times.

I was thrilled to win the stick shift class, and amazed at the gauranteed payouts and sponsors that had been secured. Having said that, the low car count and breakage in the stick class had me thinking, and after talking to a few other racers, I decided the best thing to do was donate back half the class winnings ($500) to help with next years race. That still covered my diesel fuel, entry, and food for the day. And let's face it, breaking even when racing is a win! 😁

It was also a nice surprise and honor to be presented the McCorkle showmanship award! I got to spend time with Randy and Robert back in the old NAMDRA days and share lots of laughs. They were ALL about manual trans racing! Bill and Jack Ketchum, Jim Landis, myself and others enjoyed time with the McCorkles at the track and away, going out to dinner, telling stories (maybe a few lies) and having fun. We miss you Randy.

Thanks Damian!

I was lucky to be close to GAD this year.  Comments I heard were the shade is great, the flyer that was posted on Edgewater page wasn't clear for non AMC facebook page folk.  I think we would get more Mopar and UMTR guys if we improved that communication.  The announcing could have been better.

My personal opinion is the venue is great, the track supported it well.  This is my local track so I was surprised that basically the whole crew was there.  It was a big risk for Edgewater to open the concessions, but obviously with the turnout they made a lot of money to cover the full crew.

I sent a young driver out in a car that wasn't prepared properly and he did great.  I ran a car unfamiliar to me and I could have been better.  I knew I was missing a few things and I'm sad to see some people that were here that I didn't get a chance to connect with.  Advice for next year, plan on showing up at the track the night before.  That is the best time to socialize and the few of us that did had a good time.

Congrats to Damian for a great first event.

"pretty sure" that the car labeled above was not Stewart Forney unless he brought two cars.  His car was a shade lighter.  I am curious who did have the beautiful Bittersweet car shown above since that is my favorite color on an AMX.

Yep, that's Stewart's car. He parked just across the pit road from me and Ketchum to hang out with us for the day. The car is powered by a healthy small block Ford. SUPER nice car!

What a adventure.
My old Dodge truck did a great job. 24 foot box trailer loaded down.
51 miles into the trip, rolling 70 mph, both right side trailer tires exploded. The semi truck to the right side saw what happened, he hit his 4 way flashers and slowed down to allow me to move over to the right side berm of 71.
How many spare tires does someone bring??
Correct. 1.
Thankfully a gentleman with West Virginia tags in a ford pickup truck pulled over to see if he could lend us a hand…His name was Joe…
the spare tire only had 25 lbs not 60 in it. And it sure didnt like all weight.
At 10 minutes till 5pm on a Thursday. Tire stores i called closed at 5pm…Joe called 1 and they told him they would stay open to help us out…
So, we throw both blown tires in the back of his truck. I stay with my truck and trailer, and Mark rides off with Joe to the tire store.
Mark calls me about 30 minutes later and says. 2 tires mounted ( no receipt) would be 280.00.
I think real quick, and say. If they have 2 more, buy them also… id given mark 500 cash and my discover card. 20 minutes later Joe and Mark return … figured i would rather have tires that need to be on rims then trying to find tires IF we needed more for the other side.
Before Joe left from helping us out, I’m handing him 100.00 bill for all his help, he refused the $$ but i said Joe, please take the money, it would have cost 5 times that or more if we would have had to call wrecker service. He did except the 100 then.
He restored my faith in humanity!!!
So. On the side of the freeway hour a hour and a half, and we are back on the road. Stopped by a TA travel truck stop, topped off the fuel. 1/4 tank worth. 80.00. Then aired up the spare we had to 60 psi… alright only 97 miles to go…lol…
We arrived finally and several friends were already at the track awaiting folks arriving.
Cooked half a dozen burgers on the grill we brought, potato salad, chips, cold drinks, loaded up the ole pipe and enjoyed the rest of the evening.
Not much sleep Thursday night. The floor of the box trailer is pretty hard. Lol…
One of my buddies picked up a few Wendy’s breakfast sandwiches for our breakfast.
And the day started off pretty nicely .
Last year i had made another clutch base adjustment, but had not been able to get back to the track. So pull up to make a time run in the right lane, do a burn out to heat the tires. Stage the car,
Hit the line lock/2 step button ( set at 6000 rpm)
Light comes down, let go of the button and it blows the tires off, then hooks and goes…mph is best the car has ever produced, but et much slower than the mph. But the car is finally back in the 9 second zone…
Cool car down, charge up the battery to make another test pass in the left  lane. ( Joe's pic)
I made no adjustments to the clutch.
Same staging procedure, but try left lane. Car hooked this time, front end came up in the air and before i could yank 2nd gear the nose came down.
60 foot was better but overall et was just a tad better…
I decided again, no clutch base adjustment, I’ll just dial the car in at 9.70 for eliminations.
Something wacky going on the clutch pedal. Push it down and sometimes it would go right into gear, a different push of the pedal and it felt different and wouldn’t go into gear without raking.
That is no way to try and run eliminations.
So i bowed out of eliminations and was spectating.
Loaded up, the drive home i ran right at the speed limit or a few mph under. Other than a accident slower traffic by 25 minutes we made it back home safe and sound…
that is just a small part of my GAD adventure this year!

Had a GREAT AMC DAY for sure

To tell you the truth I brought 3 spares with me for my trailer, but that still didn't cut it.

On the way home the driver side rear of the trailer had a vacancy. The whole hub and tire was gone. Nothing but a spindle sticking out with the left overs of the wheel bearings stuck on it.

I'm glad it had twelve ply tires or the other one on that side probably would have blown up.

Found a hub at the local camper supply.  I did grease the wheel bearings last year with a grease gun. I guess I need to be more pro-active on the maintenance.

When i had my trailer, i got a complete hub assy complete with lube,  bearings, washer, nut and cotter pin and cover.    I then got a spindle from an old axle and welded the spindle to where my spare would go..  then i mounted the spindle and spare onto the trailer.
You never know when a hub will go on a trailer..

Glad you made it home safe and sound.
