I figured I'd finally make a proper project thread for the '73 Javelin AMX I recently picked up!

I've owned several Javelins over the years, with the most recent being a '74 Javelin AMX I sold via a classic car consignment dealer, and subsequently destroyed only 3 months after the last owner acquired it.

I'm in my early 30s now, but I've been into muscle cars my whole life, and got into AMCs when I moved to Kenosha when I was in high school. AMCs always provided that "X factor" that not many other cars fulfilled in my brain. Fast forward to earlier this year, and I was dreaming about getting another Javelin...or Gremlin, American, or maybe even a Pacer to just go full bore with and put a 360-based 383 stroker in it.

Unfortunately, I was also trying to get a business up and running, so the flow of expendable income was glacially slow. However, that didn't stop me from window shopping online! After looking at a couple over-priced, 70% complete, glorified parts cars, I came across something very interesting on Craigslist.

I came across what I would consider a "holy grail" car. I discovered a '73 Javelin AMX. And it had plenty of goodies like A/C, power steering, power brakes, functional cowl hood with air cleaner still intact, rally pack gauges, and most importantly...a 401. However, as previously mentioned, I had no money. The listing stated the car was in rough shape, had a seized engine, and was more than likely better off a parts car. It looked rough from the pictures, but I figured someone would be interested in fixing it up for the low asking price of $2500.

It was painful to have to pass up, but I felt better sharing the ad in hopes that someone would snatch it up and save it. Life goes on, and so did the window shopping.

Fast forward about 2 months, and I was ready to buy myself an affordable project car. After seeing the Javelin AMX, I decided I would be happiest pursuing a Javelin, and focused in on acquiring a worthy project. After putting up the bat signal on AMC groups on Facebook and the forums, I was made aware that a couple of good candidates were right in my hometown of Phoenix, AZ. As many of you are probably already aware, Dan Curtis runs AZ AMC Restorations here in Arizona, and contacted me about what he had available at the moment. One of which was...(drum roll).......the '73 Javelin AMX!

I checked out the car in person shortly after, and decided that despite it's rather dilapidated condition, it was totally worth taking on the project. Structurally speaking, the car was pretty rust free, with some minor areas that need some attention. I had also recently acquired my own personal shop space, so it seemed like it was meant to be. After working out a deal with Dan, the car was dropped of at my shop, which we affectionately refer to as "The High Speed Shop" (my brother and I are fiber optic technicians).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSb1Hjkg-LE" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSb1Hjkg-LE

I have a little girl on the way, so I'm hoping that by the time she's big enough I'll have this car on the road so we can share the joy of cruising and hotrodding! I also decided to make this an ongoing series on my Youtube channel so that all AMC and muscle car fans alike can follow along with the progress. I'll update this thread with up to date videos and other progress I make on the car.

I was pretty happy to read your thread because at first glance of the title, I was thinking the gas monkey hacks did a Javelin. LOL

It's a great story and good luck with your adventure!

Thanks guys! I just picked up a rear axle out of a CJ5 yesterday with 3.54 gears, so I’m gonna swap those into my axle with 3.15s in it currently. Also hoping to get the rotating assembly out of the 401 today so it’ll be ready to drop off at the machine shop.

Yea, original color is Cordoba Brown. The old was was a '74 and was Medium Green. It wasn't restored, but it had an older paint job.

Your repaint of the interior looks great.  I need to do the same on my 73 Javelin (tan).  Can you tell me the type of paint (color code, etc.) that you used?  Thanks.

It’s a Tanaka racing seat. I actually found it on EBay. One thing I will say though, is if you are much wider than me, you might not fit very well in it. I’m 6’ tall and 190 lbs.

Looking great!  I've got a 73 Javelin AMX too, been working a lot on the interior this year.  Did you have to do anything special to mount the seats you got?

Wheels are nice too...what size/kind are they?

I will definitely be watching here for updates on your progress!

I like minilites on these cars, the bronze is a good choice.  What brand wheels, and what sizes for wheels and tires?
Will you be keeping the original brown exterior?
I appreciate the updates.  Its starting to get pretty cold here and challenging to spend much time on my car.

Thank you! I think they look great! They are Rota RKR wheels in 15x8 size (all 4). They have 5” backspacing, but the lowering plate we’re making for the front spindles will push it 1/2” towards the outside. The front tires are 235/60-15 and the rears are 275/60-15.

Thanks! The plan is to make an adapter on the original sliders and use them on the aftermarket seats. If the rivets are tapped out of the original sliders, you can use bolts and washers instead, so that’s the route I’m gonna go. Just need to recondition the sliders and make the adapters.

I made a designfor my seat brackets. I did, however, underestimate how heavy duty 1/4” steel plate is. 😆 I made my own design to adapt the Tanaka seats to the original sliders. No cutting or modifying required. I’ll have to upload the design from my computer since the forum isn’t letting me on my phone.

I also put together another video of the progress on the front end of the car. It’s effectively stripped and painted!

Offenhauser ceramic coated

This is how she currently sits. Front end suspension is loosely in place. Needs to fix some minor mistake we made on the brakes. Wheels are just sitting in place for the picture.

Also recently un-jammed the steering lock rod and got the ignition cylinder moving again. Just got parts in yesterday to put the horn assembly and cover back on. Done doing interior stuff for the time being, but still need to eventually look at the windows and try to get them in better shape before reinstalling the interior panels. Also need to get the Schroth harness setup at some point.

Want to get the brake system sorted out before diving into the transmission rebuild. Engine is nearing completion!

"The Road to Roadworthiness, Part 3" is up. I started digging into a bunch of potential electrical issues on this video. There's A LOT of corrosion going on with these smaller pieces. It's my theory that the car sat in some salty sea air for the 40 years it was in Washington. May it was covered by a tarp and trapped moisture inside? Hoping to conclude this video with Part 4 soon!

Took out the instrument panel and cleaned it up and replaced a bunch of parts on the back, including the circuit board, CVR, lights, etc. Also painted the red strip back on.

Got everything back in the car, and it's about 90% working. I have a bulb or two out in the dash I'll have to get fixed (I think I put them in "backwards"). I also don't have turn signals for some reason, so I'll have to look into that as well. Nice long video for the progress coming out tomorrow on my Youtube channel.

Finally got the rear axle, new leaf springs, Caltracs, and shocks installed and it looks like this! This was my fault for not getting measurements before I started. Jegs listed the Calvert part 101-34 as 68-74 Javelin compatible. This is obviously incorrect, but I somehow missed that when ordering them. Jegs is exchanging them for the correct 102-34 leaf springs! Well, as soon as I get the opportunity to get everything back out, that is.

Was it easy for you to get your parts? There's been like eight times when I had to just make my own part..
I keep telling people I got a bad working situation for working on my rambler, and keep telling them how lucky they are, having a indoors work space, with a bench and a place for a vice, and flat ground for safely jacking up the car, and reasonable access to lots of power for welding ect... Buy I'll say it again my freind, your lucky you have that work space, don't know if you could easily do what you did in 16 months with your javelin in a spot like my rambler... I'll tell ya, you gotta have lots of bulldog in ya to spend two years working away at 13 degrees of an angle outdoors!

There’s been a few parts that took a while or I couldn’t find. I was pretty smart by buying most of the parts I needed earlier on before I was even ready to tackle the individual projects.

There are a lot of things I’ve done to just make things work, like the throttle cable connection to the gas pedal (which will be in an upcoming video on the YouTube channel).

It’s definitely been a blessing to have a big shop to use for this project, but a 2-car garage would have been sufficient. I’m actually not going to have this shop for a whole lot longer and will be moving all the operations to my back yard. We’re building a 10x12 work shop, and the car will be under a temporary car port of sorts. I’ll definitely be doing my fair share of work outside when that happens. Even at the current shop, I only have a swamp cooler for the 115 degree days here in AZ, which brings it down to an icy 95 degrees.

Got the wiring for the shifter light sorted out. Now I need to figure out how to run the shifter cable since it comes out of the front of the shifter. I did not account for this when mocking it up in the car with the console. ☹️

Was able to figure out how to get the shifter in the car with the console. Just took a little figurin’ and supposin’. I do however, have to figure out where to drill my hole for the shifter cable. I think it’s gonna be in the trans tunnel behind the center dash as much as possible.

Finally got the header bolt situation sorted out 100%. Had to buy an ARP set with 5/16” hex heads. Also finally stopped procrastinating on the fuel lines. Finished buttoning up the lines to the fuel tank. Haven’t decided yet if I want to get fuel injection hose clamps or not.

Guess I should provide an update!

Here’s some things I’ve done lately:

-Lowered the front end (cut a coil out of the springs)
-Went through 3 torque converter iterations (I think this one will work)
-Got all my vacuum lines connected
-Filled the power steering pump
-Got gas in the tank
-Buffed out the hood
-Installed PCV valve
-Bypassed heater passage
-Installed B&M shift cable adapters
-Installed new neutral safety switch

Still need to tighten front suspension, add coolant, install the trans (for the 4th time), connect all the transmission stuff (dipstick, kickdown, neutral safety switch connector, shift cable), and install the starter. I should pretty much be ready to start and drive it at that point.

Wow...this has been an amazing learning experience for me, as well as a huge lesson in how to be persistent and stay motivated. Getting the Javelin to the point where I can get it started and driving has been more involved in just about every way imaginable. It's been a huge mental, physical, and emotional drain on me in the past few months, especially.

Just a basic update to let the interwebs know that the project is still alive and well. I'm in roughly the same place I was in the middle of January, but some small inconsequential things have been acommplished, such as getting a lot of the interior pieces back together.

We also determined the cause of the trans being locked up was the rear servo. I believe it was getting cockeyed in the bore, likely due to the much heavier spring supplied by the shift kit. I had the whole assembly replaced with a billet kit, so hopefully we'll be good to go. We're hoping to get everything reinstalled this weekend and hopefully fired up.

I do know that the power steering system is leaking really bad out of the lower pitman arm seal, so that's gonna need to be fixed soon. Already bought the kit--just waiting for time to actually replace it.

There’s still a few things that need to be done before it’s technically “roadworthy”. We’re swapping out the steering box, power steering pump (replacement failed), and we’re putting in an aftermarket tach.

Been doing a little carb tuning and trying to figure out what’s going on with the trans. I believe I’m having an issue with the governor on the trans, as it’s starting in 3rd gear when put in drive and doesn’t automatically downshift, either. 1st and reverse also feel like they’re slipping, so I think a band adjustment needs to be made.

Do you have the trans shift lever properly adjusted? Should be a Torqueflite in that car, which doesn't use a modulator valve.

Did a lot more work on the car. Rejetted the carb, changed the vacuum secondary spring, lowered the radiator for hood clearance, replaced a fan that had bad wiring, replaced the license plate light, and messed around with the 727 some more. I made an adjustment to the kickdown cable and also did the "trick" of going over 25mph and putting in park for a very quick moment. Not sure what made the difference, but it was starting in 1st and going through the gears when put in drive.

It IS however, still slipping pretty badly in 1st and reverse. I've decided I'm not dumping any more money into getting the transmission to work properly, and have made a pretty big decision to do the T5 swap. Currently looking for a clutch/brake pedal assembly. I have a couple leads. Also got all the linkage stuff already, so most of the hard part is done already.

I’ve acquired just about everything I need for the T5 swap. I’ll be doing all the work I can before removing the 727, and then I’ll get everything together for the actual manual swap. I’m feeling pretty good about it overall!

The idea of the charity AMX was for AMC'ers around the country to restore an AMX and auction it off for charity. AMC groups were to transport and restore a portion of the car and let it move on to the next group until completed. From what I can tell from online posts, it did not go well. Some people did make excellent contributions to the project, while others did poor quality work and some were taking good quality parts off the car and putting on lower quality parts, etc. The saving grace for this fiasco came in the form of a long time AMC collector in Canada named Fred Phillips. Fred paid to have the car restored and when it sold at auction, Fred then double the money with his cash, as a donation to the charity. Thanks Fred! You demonstrated that our community can make the right choices, even though some people were working against that goal.
Tom
PS I am sure there are others on the forum who can fill in many details, but this is how I understand the overview. Also, I don't see the similarity to the Faster and Louder Javelin.

The 727 was taken out a few weekends ago. We made modifications to the trans crossmember to allow us proper fitment for the trans mount. We got the bellhousing, clutch, trans, and shifter installed last week. Last week I also got measurements for the new driveshaft and put Precision Driveline in charge of making me the new one.

Today I got the new driveshaft and got to work on assembling almost everything that was left. The strut rod was removed and drilled for the Z bar mount a few days ago, so it was reinstalled along with the rest of the clutch linkage. New fluid was put in, the driver side header was tightened up again (loosened to get strut rod bracket off), and “exhaust” was put back on as well.

All that’s left is figuring out the backup lights and reinstalling my O2 sensor. Then it’s time to test everything out!

Well, I got an actual exhaust installed and everything with the transmission “worked”, but I stupidly didn’t get the flywheel balanced so it all had to come back out to get that done.

I also had a small oil leak near the back of the oil pan. Tightened it up a bit and I think it’ll be ok. Debating getting a Centerforce clutch for when I put it all back together, but they are pricey. I also had some weird wear patterns on the flywheel (small heat spots on one half of the flywheel?).

After I got everything up and running, I noticed there was a small drip from the differential cover. I already "knew" I had bad threads on one bolt, so I checked tightness and seemingly found another bolt hole with bad threads. Well, after dropping the tank (in anticipation of putting in helicoils on the top holes), I found out I mistakenly used the shorter factory diff cover bolts and that was causing my issues.

I got the tank back in and new diff cover bolts in with "The Good Stuff" RTV sealing it up. Another mistake I made before was using RTV *and* the gasket. I also put the fluid in before the RTV had a chance to set last time. Many mistake were made, but it should all be remedied now.

So while I'm taking a little break from doing big stuff on the car, I'm planning my next move.

I've noticed that Legendary Interiors has a "rear bench installation kit". It only includes one long piece of foam and includes some cotton for about $280. I would still have to buy another piece of foam to do the seat back for about $80...so $360.

I've priced out all the individual materials (minus the cotton) from other sources, and it comes up to $140. I'm also going to try to use a good but used seat cover if I can. If that doesn't work, I'm going to buy a cover from either Lseat.com or Legendary.

Did a few smaller things in the past couple days. Dug out my blower motor and wiper motor and both still work--very surprising! I cleaned up the wiper motor and painted. Cleaned up the blower, but haven't painted it yet. I threw both back on the car so I'd get less heat inside the car from the engine bay. Will take the wiper motor back off soon to properly connect it to the wiper arms.

Went back to the beginning of the thread and saw what you paid for the car.  Pretty much a steal for any 401 AMX that was in one piece!

I paid $4,500 for my 304 Javelin, which ran but was very dirty and had no brakes.  Turned out to be a much better deal than I thought at the time as I haven't had to touch the engine in the 10k miles I've put on it since then, but it still t needed new upholstery, some paint and a front suspension rebuild.

Paid $7,800 for my 360 Javelin that looked good at 10 yards, ran and had a decent interior, but at 114k miles, everything mechanical was pretty much worn out.

I'd say you did pretty well.  Of course, as anyone who has tried to bring these cars back to life knows, what you pay for the car is usually a drop in the bucket compared to what you spend fixing it up.

Oh, definitely! I tried to tally up everything recently, and I have to be close to about 35k. I could have done a few things cheaper, and probably just not do some things all together, but I also was very budget-minded for a vast majority of the car. I probably could have trimmed a good 5k from the total price, but when it's all said and done, that's a drop in the bucket.

I have a good amount of interior work to do, but nothing super crazy. Next big thing will be getting the A/C working, but that's probably going to wait until next spring. My brother and I were also recently talking about removing the rear glass to re-seal it. It has a pretty big leak, and I'm afraid the whole window might pop out if I take it on the highway with the windows down. lol
