It's not clear what you are asking for. What transmission? Is this a replacement for an existing setup? Research on a new installation?

The four speed in a 1979 is an SR-4 and was barely adequate for a 258 six. It was used behind a 304 in the Spirit AMX (only in Spirit body, and I think only AMX... but may be wrong there), but really wasn't strong enough for ANY horse-play at all. I've seen a few worn out SR-4s in Spirits with 258s in them, though they are rather high mileage (80-100+K.. not high mileage for today's cars, but was back then). Those cars had been fairly abused by youngsters though. If it was driven normally and only abused on occasion it should be... adequate. I wouldn't put a 4.0L in front of one though. If you do a 4.0L swap you need a WC T-5 or the BA10/5 (which is fine for a light street car, barely adequate for a truck... close to the strength of the WC T-5, stronger than a Non WC T-5) or AX-15 (strongest!) that came with the 4.0L.

I agree. I was a parts manager in an AMC dealer in 1979-80 and we had to replace a SR-4 behind a 304 in a '79 AMX under warranty. Factory service rep wasn't happy, but it happened. Yes, that transmission was marginal behind a strong 258.

I have a 4.0 in my 66 American convertible and it has an AX15 behind it. It works well and any parts store has clutch parts.

IMHO I think he is asking if a clutch kit for a 4.0 will work with his son's factory 258 4 speed car.
