Received quote from Classic Auto Air, The base cost to rebuild your compressor is $335.00 and the base cost to rebuild the clutch is $160.00, plus shipping.

Starting to think I may be better off just buying a reman compressor and clutch vs rebuilding original. Geesh that seems high.

Any experience with other rebuilders out there besides Classic Auto Air?

Chinese repop Yorks are available brand new for under $ 200. on the internet. Sold under various brands. These are direct replacements but you need to make sure you get the proper suction / discharge orientation as they're sold with both left and right suction orientations. Orientation is referenced when looking at the compressor from the front. Also make sure you get the proper head fittings. Most earlier AMCs use RotoLock but most of these repop compressors have TubeO fittings which are not quite interchangeable. There are TubeO to Rotolock adapters available for a few bucks on line that drop right in to make the conversion.

PM me if you want a real CCI/York for cheap. I have one that I bought new, ran about 100 miles, barely operated the AC, then pulled when I swapped to 4.0 head and accessories. Been sitting in my garage. It has only had mineral oil run in it.

Shipping (from AL) might hurt a little bit, but I'll be glad if it goes to a good home. I'd take $75 plus actual shipping cost.

Oh, and it has the two-groove pulley and clutch, different diameters, which is unobtanium as far as I could tell.

Tube-O on top. I can check which side the suction is on for you, if yours has to lay down. Mine was factory air, so it was upright anyway.

Edit: Oh yeah, it's probably about 7 years old.

Thankfully lots of heavy equipment like tractors use the York compressor still.

Don't forget, you can always buy the compressor seal kits from NAPA to rebuild it yourself for like $50. There is a main seal kit and the shaft seal kit. Together, they replace all the seals in the compressor. York compressors seldom wear out unless they were run without proper lubrication.

Rebuilding the clutch is nothing more than replacing the bearing. It has a number on it. I suppose the clutch disk face could eventually wear down enough to no longer be usable, but I've never seen one that worn.

Enough people yeet their York compressor or something else....or nothing at all...that it's not hard to gather parts to piece a good one together. Fords used tons of them too. Lots of motorhomes. Etc.

They still build them in Decatur Ill with the old tooling from borg warner that built them here. CCI or climate control
