I am in process of installing the plastic sheet that goes under the front door panels in a 69 AMX.  Memory says that the factory used some goo around the perimeter to attach the plastic to the door metal before the door panel was snapped on.  The goo never really got hard and in the future one could pull the plastic off, do work on the window mechanism and reapply the plastic w/o more goo since it was still tacky.  When I had the car repainted back in the late 80's we removed the goo.  Any ideas what is the best stuff to use that resembles the original goo?

String caulk works well.

3M Strip Caulk (3M part # 051135-08578), a/k/a "dum-dum" works great for this application. It is has many uses including sealing around openings in firewalls. Note, several AMC vendors sell the correct pre-cut door and interior quarter weather shields- if you want to keep the factory appearance.  Bruce

That strip caulk works perfect for that.
No offence but when I see that about a piece of plastic, that no one will ever see but you, to keep it factory looking is just crazy. It's just a moisture barrier. Ermm

Thanks everyone.  I think I'll try the Dum Dum stuff.  I like the name!  As for factory appearance I'm into that a little but am really thinking more about the original ability to peel back the plastic in the future and it seems like the Dum Dum will do that...

50 years later they still use a similar product on the door panel moisture barriers.

My early build 70 had the string caulk and tar paper moisture shields.

FYI, the string caulk worked great.  Used 1/8" diameter that came in 1 foot lengths.  Butted the ends together tightly.  When I do the drivers door I think I will use a continuous length piece though...

Just a quick question: you didn’t mention the reason for having the doors exposed, and I’m curious if you installed new door panels. Just curious, entertaining the idea of installing new door panels on my 68 AMX.

Not sure you can get a new door panel for a 68 AMX unless you're willing to wait a year or two with SMS. Legendary makes them for 69, but they're different: 68 has the arrow head while 69 has the wood grain rectangle. The 69's will, however, fit fine on a 68 if that's the way you want to go.
