Spring changes made a huge difference. I converted to a Mustang (Opentracker) double roller perches and 900# springs. I'm considering 1000# springs to keep the crossmember off the ground and assist handling. I also went with a softer front bar considering the stout spring rate. Right now it has just a little oversteer, which I like.

I recognized the tracks in the photos right away. Used to drive up from Arizona in summer to do the SCCA races at both Pueblo and PPIR. Pueblo was one of my favorite tracks. Hard to believe it's been 20 years since my last race! And of course, Donohue was my boyhood hero and the reason I raced SCCA in the first place.
I love that you've taken such care to accurately recreate the car. I'll bet Roger Penske himself would approve. |

This car this just unreal. Prompted me to check whether I could get a room near Lime Rock Labor Day Weekend. They're running the historic Trans Am cars. The Trans Am cars come out to the East Coast every 7 years or so. Last time I saw the Javelins racing there was in 2006. Found a place about 30 minutes east of Lime Rock and it looks like the wife and I are heading up for the Sunday show and Monday race! Steve

Time for an update. I have wanted to find a solution to convert the AMC 20 to a full floater for quite some time. The original 71 Penske-Donohue Javelin had a AMC full floater. I could have just put a Ford 9 inch full floater in the car, easy enough, but it wouldn't be what the 71 TA Javelin ran. I finally found a solution, although for AMC nothing is just a drop in, it always needs some level of fabrication. Attached are some photos of the kit as well as the procedure to align the spindles before final weld. By the way, it involves cutting the flange off the axle tubes and welding on the spindles. The double splined full floater axles are not part of the kit, I ordered them direct from Moser after supplying them with measurements. I post some of this stuff on Facebook, but I put it up here on this forum for future reference. The photos are not in any order.

One other thing related to the conversion to a full floater, is how the spindle bearings get lubricated. Could just let the gear oil from the diff run down the axle tubes and lube the bearings, but there is a very good potential for leaking at the hub or between the hub and the drive plate. On a race track that's not good. The other way is to install axle seals that go in the axle tube right off the center section. They seal the axle to the tube and keep the gear oil in the center section. Then the wheel bearings can be greased just like the front with wheel bearing grease. The challenge was finding a seal that would work in the smallish, 2.5" tube of the AMC 20. Attached are some photos.

That full floater is just plain awesome! Great work and very commendable effort involved in figuring all this out. Keeping the faith is a tough job, you're doing it very well. BTW, keep posting, this is one of my favorite threads on the forum.

I've heard the term full floater before but what is the difference between it and any other axle?
