Hello classic car
lovers. I am looking for feedback from anyone who has put larger than
stock rims on their car. I have a '65 drop top 440 Rambler American with
stock 14 inch rims. I want to go bigger, 16 or 17 inch but keep the
overall size stock or close to it. I worry how the ride will change. I
assume the handling will improve but will it ride like a tank? Your
experiences and comments are crucial to me and I thank all in advance.

Lower sidewall will create a harsher ride.

^^^^^^^^nailed it! I put my 911 on lower profile tires years ago, the ride sucks, it's time to go back to oem sizing. Sure your wheels probably don't look sexy but you probably don't want to go bigger than 15's with the same backset, at least that will give you a larger selection of possible tires... Good luck.

Sizing matters - find a car like yours, same model and suspension setup, with wheels that fit the look you want. Too big or small, no good and hard to fix once tires are mounted typically. |

Had 20560r15 front and 21560r15 rears on my 67 American and the ride and handling were great. Dont think i would go to 16 or17s. Just my opinion.

Since the bolt pattern is the same as ford and mopar, maybe you have a buddy that would loan you a set for a weekend so you can see for yourself? Its a big ask, but something to think about. The selection of 16" tire sizes are limited, but you may be able to find what you are looking for. 17's may look too big on your american, but its whatever you like.

16s/17s have their place IMO, mostly for clearing larger calipers and rotors. If you get into bigger brakes some times the 15s won't do it. 15s were always the standby for tire selection, but I think that's shifting these days.

Agree, I run 205/70R14 on my '66 440. I based this on tire size used with the SC/Rs: E70x14 - 25.92" 205/70R14 - 25.3" 205/65R15 - 25.5 205/60R16 - 25.7"
