My freshly built 68 390 Is experiencing very low oil pressure. I purchased a new Timing case from Bulltear and oil pump housing. The only thing I have not replaced are the oil pump gears. I have purchased the gear kit and I am replacing them this afternoon. Can this be done without removing the timing case cover? The kit says to just lube the gear in oil prior to installation but I saw a video where a gentleman covers the gears in grease. Any tips on this would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. BTW the break in oil (compcam oil) was just replaced yesterday with 5 qts Penzzoil 10W-40 and a bottle of Lucas ZDDP. Oil pressure is at 40 cold and hot at 0 in gear.

Yes, just remove the 7/16" head bolts that hold on the Oil Filter Adapter, the gears will want to fall out.....put the next gears back in, new gasket, I would recommend priming engine oil pump before you start it "dry" in the oil pump.

Pump gear end play is somewhat critical, the gears should stick out of the housing a few thousands of an inch. There is more than one thickness of gasket, to thick of gasket can cause problems. There are sveral threads on this forum on low oil pressure yo can search for. While you have the end plate off make sure the oil relief valve is moving freely. I use Vaseline to pack the pump gear cavity. But pulling the distributor and pre oiling the motor would be better.

x2. TSM I have says Vaseline, probably because it just makes it easy to prime the pump and then just disappears.

Glad to hear someone else uses Vaseline, last time I brought that up, you would have thought I said to used Valve Grind Compound!!  It is what the TSM says and what I have always used.

I will post my results after installation. Hope this clears my low oil pressure issue. I would hate to spin a bearing after rebuilding this 390.

...It`s funny i`ve been using vaseline for over 30 years...I still don’t see the problem...First of all it dissolves into the oil...second if people think a table spoon of petroleum jelly is going to compromise 5 to 8 quarts of oil i would have to disagree... i need proof....

You said it was a fresh rebuild. Don't suppose you have the main and rod bearing clearance measurements.

I have been an aircraft mechanic for over 20 years an I can tell you vasoline is used on alot of stuff involved with engine oil as well as skydrol and 5606. It is the safest bet.

                    Who built this motor?

Main and Rod bearings are standard size since thats what came off during the rebuild and crank and rods have not been machined. Unfortunately i replaced the oil pump gear kit with same results. I noticed marks on the oil pump end cap as seen on the pic provided.
