My oil pressure gauge in my 1980 Spirit AMX suddenly stopped working. It reads in the negative range with or without the sending unit plugged in. It does this when the car is running or with the key turned to run or accessory and not running. Problem?

Ground the sender wire from the plug and see if it goes all the way high

If grounding the wire pegs the gauge, it's not the gauge - it's the sender.
Sadly; they fail. I myself have gone through several in my Hornet and at least 3 on my humpster over the years.  It's just the nature of the beast.  A rubber diaphragm that moves and distorts with oil pressure and heat and everything under the hood.

Just be sure to get the right one for your Spirit.  There are two types.  You want the later Spirit, Spirit/GT, Spirit/AMX or Hornet/AMX style.  Uh, PACER would also use the same time with gauge.

There is more than one wire on the sender. One single one on the top And also a plug on the lower part of the sender. Which wire needs to be grounded?

You might be seeing the sender, which is the single wire, and the Oil Pressure Switch (multiple wires and a plug) being attached to the same port on the block.

Yes. Ground that wire to anything.

a word from the wise..  i would have two people doing this.. one to look at the gauge and one to ground it.   you do not want that wire grounded for any length of time or it will burn out the gauge.  it should not take more than one second.  you will see the gauge move.  thats all you need to know, is if it moves..

I would be going aftermarket for that critical measurement along with water temp. Those Spirit/AMX gauges were there more as a gimmick than actual measurement.
