Now that's interesting to know as with my hacking around that's sort of what I've done on a couple of repairs on other stuff where I wanted the joint protected.

Yes, I will definitely be using some weld-through primer where there are lap joints.

Right now its got an iron block 196 in it that needs a rebuild. I can get a '65 Ambassador that has got the 287 in it pretty cheap, but the current owner says that he thinks it has a bad wrist pin in one of the rods/pistons; this one would need a rebuild too. So the engine/trans, torque tube, rear end would bolt in my wagon with the Ambassador crossmember?

I've been pretty busy eradicating all the rust that I discovered in this thing. I pulled the fender to find the usual rambler rust.
I've been making new patch panels out of 16 gauge steel and a vice and hammer. Below you can see my firewall-inner fender well brace. The piece sitting on top will connect the firewall with the shock tower. I still have a bit of patching to do on the passenger side. In the end I will have gone all the way up the firewall! I had to rebuild the driver side door hinge mount because the metal actually tore out where the backing plate was! It wasn't even rusty! And to make matters worse someone tried to mig weld it back together without removing the door! I just ended up cutting out around the weld job and replaced the metal. I'm hoping to have most of the rust fixed in the next few weeks. Next up is the hole where the gas pedal was and the tailgate that's no longer connected to the hinges.... Didn't see the thread until now. You're making a lot of progress, looks good!. I replaced a fender on my wagon and it had the same hole where the fender gusset meets the cowl.
I'm glad to see you're bringing it back to life and saving it from small block Chevy doom! The Ambassador would make a good donor for a V8 driveline, it'd have a lot of what you need. |

If it's a similar year Ambassador, pretty much all of the mechanical stuff is a direct interchange.
