Would like opinions on the use and/or installation of what we used to call mud flaps on a Javelin.
I note that there's already a chip or two, probably from road crap tossed up from the rear wheels. It had all 4 on it when I got the car. I removed them for repairs and repaint, and they were sad enough I tossed 'em.
Does anyone advocate going with new ones? Style and/or type?
Front and rear, rear only? (front probably not possible or needed with trendsetters on it)
But it was irritating to see that after only a few days of getting the car back together and it had a couple "stone chips" behind the read wheels already.
Thoughts - open to any and all.............. both sides.

In jegs they sell rolls of thick clear "tape" to use in these areas
cause a lotta rubber gets on the quarters from burnouts
and can be hard to get off. Maybe clear vinyl from a sign shop also.
Or mud flaps too. Saw a video where a GTO did a nasty burnout
and tire rubber collected on the flap and caught fire !

That sounds like a decent idea! I have installed the "invisible bra" on the nose of several of my recent daily drivers & it has protected them well from rock chips and bugs. I never thought about using this material behind the wheel openings in place of mud flaps, but it makes good sense.

Get some big ugly mud flaps and attach them with binder clips from your local office supply store. You can attach them while you're driving, and remove them for show. The only place the clips will scratch the paint is behind the lip of the wheel well where nobody will see anyways. It will protect the car from road rash without really detracting from the natural beauty of the car.
OTOH, a couple of smoky burnouts should provide a protective rubber coating on the quarters. |

bigbad, not a bad idea!
I don't want to tape anything - that in itself can cause damage, IMO, and as it gets older, tape gets chewed and cloudy and thus gets uglier. Besides, my luck the tape would lift the finish.... Nothing sticky will be used. It eventually gets chewed up and needs replaced itself, causing other issues, IMO. That stuff is fine for racers, but this won't be melting rubber onto the steel.

Check out this link to a 3M product...
5yr. warranty, won't damage finish or paint, easily removed, etc. Sounds like the ideal product! I'm ordering some today & will let you know how it works.

Nah -- for that you'll need some of those sweet little deer whistles to stick on your front bumper (JC Whitney usually has them on sale during the hunting season... I think they're on the same page as curb feelers).

Keep in mind that redoing the vinyl top removed paint down to the metal on this car, so I won't put ANY adhesive in it that I think may need to come off later, as off it will come, along with finish.
It will, like any product, eventually fail or look scratched or dinged and require replacement.
It's probably just me, but I am not for any adhesives applied to a car....... You'll see an edge, it may work loose or bubble, etc. chips and scratches will show as rough edges on a plastic film.
Bottom line, this car will not see any plastic products stuck to it other than the stripe kit I have for it. Even those are only rated for about 5 years technically.
Sorry, not for me.
It will be interesting to see/hear/read your report non-the-less.

Thing is I have found deer whistles do just that. They summon deer. We have determined at the Nest that if you leave your smog pump intact then you will not encounter deer. So the EPA must have hired deer to do their enforcement for them. Now that I have completely hijacked Bill's thread, back to mud flaps for the Javelin.
