You are bouncing off the clutch plates. They are not aligned with the spider gear teeth.

The axle never touches the clutch plates, they are splined to the case and the outside of the spider gear. My guess is the thrust block is out of place

Yep I said that wrong, the plates have tabs the fit in slots. The clutch discs have no tabs but are splined. You are bouncing off those. They are sandwiched between the plates.

Not to be critical, but as an FYI for others, for backlash you want the indicator stem as close as possible to tangent of the OD of the ring gear. At a 45* angle, about as shown, you are introducing a 41% error: .010" actual backlash will read .014" on the indicator. EDIT after rereading today: At 45* the indicator will read 41% low (not high as I said above) .014" actual backlash will read .010" on the indicator at 45*. You are correct, I should be more careful with pictures. Sometimes fixing something and taking pictures get in the way of each other and the result is less than perfect.

Oops, rereading this, there's typo/fail in my reply, sorry At 45* the indicator will read 41% low (and not high): .014" actual backlash will read .010" on the indicator. And again, not being critical, thanks for posting the pics and all the info... I'll edit my prior post |

These pics kind of explain how you can do the pinion height setting without the factory tool, but get the same results. It involves some fifth grade math, and basic measuring tools, but not a lot of expensive dedicated tools.
1-2-3 blocks and a custom indicator bar are used |

Question for the group. I removed the axles from my 70 amx and these came out also. Any way of putting them back in without taking the differential apart?
