Good morning.

My 64 American has a locking gas cap. I don't have the key for it. How can I remove it?

Its one that looks like this...

Thank you,
Kevin

Are you trying to save it or just get it off?

If you don't care about saving it, I would just use a screwdriver as the key. That worked fine on my 63, though the one on there was a generic parts store replacement.

I just need to remove it. I'll get a new one.

A lock smith would take it off for about $40 and not damage your tank tube.
Other then this, if it's old and well worn, just take any key(s) that fit in the key slot and wiggle them around. Most time they will open with a little playing.
I don't know how many AMC's I can open/start with my keys. A Cole 101 or 106 will open most any file cabinet, money box, ...
I have a doge truck key that will open/start most Chrysler products 1960 through 1976.
Things you learn as a kid.

If all the other suggestions fail, take a small drill bit, 1/8" or so, and drill from the face through the lock cylinder at the pin interface (toothed part of the key).  This destroys the pin arrangement and you can turn the key with a screwdriver to get it removed.

I've removed numerous ignition locks/door locks/trunk locks using this method when all else failed.
