Yes, from what I’ve seen the majority of the interior parts are painted, not moulded-in colours. If AMC Sales & Marketing thought at the time that it would be an issue with the different shading and went to the extent of reworking the car in the brochure, then why not use that same paint for the production cars and not be accused of bait & switch?

There are plenty of surviving cars with either the ‘68 tan or the ‘69 saddle tan interior, so either people liked it back then with the different shading and it wasn’t an issue, OR it wasn’t like that when it was new.

The color mismatch of the 68 tan, 69 and 70 saddle and red, for all 3 years, got worse over time. Carpets faded the worst on all 3 years.
Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.

For a 68 tan car, the main plastic dash structure is painted.  The instrument overlay is painted. The hard plastic/metal window trim is painted.
The padded A pillar trim, the padded trim over the door glass,  the passenger "crash pad", the center speaker overlay, the front plastic kick panels.... were not painted.
Basically the "soft" parts weren't painted in 68-9.  In 70, IIRC the dash "eyebrow" was painted unless the car was black.
The red matched pretty well as compared to tan and saddle.

i posted pix 3 of my interior ( some painted parts most original and mod (add ones ) in lounge under pictures post heading "try to upload a pic or 2 "  the painted stuff i listed and the add one for better semitry under the pics . its an original 68 tan interior . I used stuff called Angelus . it a paint dye for leather and for vinyl , you can find it on ebay lots of colors , it also has additives for what your painting like matte additive or a high gloss additive and a hardner additive for the hard plastic . Now its a brush on not spray paint and will take more time to do but the quality is very good and it self leveling . the additives keep the finish from having flat finish spots or high gloss spots or dull spots like you see so often when you use vinyl sprays or plastic spray . Well worth the extra time in brushing it on for a professional look /factory look !

revisiting this - I popped for the door panels from SMS, so I'm wondering if I should order as much of the rest from them, to 'match' color, or should I switch to Legendary for the rest? Anyone have experience or viewed either's tan?
