I've completed almost the entire headlight-switch replacement process on a 1970 AMX. The only thing left to do is re-inserting the shaft/knob into the new switch. I pressed the little "button" on the underside of the new switch and pushed the shaft into the switch, but the expected "clicking" into place didn't happen, and of course the switch won't function without the shaft correctly inserted. Is there a trick to getting the shaft properly inserted into the switch?

If you hold the release button in and insert the shaft you won't hear the click. Try putting it in without holding the release button and see what happens.

Correct, you only need to depress the button when removing the shaft from the switch, not when inserting it.

You may also have to rotate the shaft as you insert... Geez, I know how this sounds...

Thanks, I finally got it done by a bit of loosening here, an unmentionable or two there, and eventually succeeded. Unfortunately, the new headlight switch only solved one of the lighting issues, so I'll have to start a new thread for the rest of the stuff.
