I’m checking out headers for 1968 AMX, specifically the Hooker 7901. I like the Hookers because they are 16 gauge steel instead of 18 gauge. The problem is, they list them for 1968-1973. Surely they can’t fit both types of exhaust ports. Has anyone used the 7901 headers? Any chance that someone has a photo of the engine side of the port? Also, is there any interference issue with the automatic transmission fill tube? Thanks

A dog leg header will work with a square port head.

So the port mismatch doesn’t cause an exhaust leak?
Anyone have a photo?

Like I mentioned before, you will probably have to weld them up then port match them to a gasket.

Rozwell,

We offer a specific header flange for the older non dogleg ports. We also use .065 wall tubing but our headers are also made using high quality 100% USA sourced 304 S/S. You will never need to replace them. Fit and ground clearance is as good as it gets and we even offer an exhaust system specifically for the AMX that mates directly to our headers. Let me know if you'd like more information on what we offer. Thank you.

I am running hooker 7901 square port headers without issue. Those are only for 67-69 square port applications although summitt and jegs list it for 68 and up. Cant help you on the automatic tranny fill tube issue.

This. I've run doglegs headers on square ports and they leaked a little because of the mismatch. Just lay a dogleg exhaust gasket over a square port and see what you think. No matter what you buy you should plan on some welding and matching if you want them to seal properly.

edit- I have no experience with the AR headers, I'm speaking of Hooker and Heddman needing work.

Steve,

There is absolutely no modifications required to run our headers. The flanges are matched perfectly to the specific ports the headers are ordered for. I can assure you all of that.

No one has addressed the question if the headers clear the automatic transmission fill tube on a AMC automatic transmission.
Questions are powerful tools...what's in your toolbox?

The BW auto tranny filler tube in the pan will need to be modified to clear. The tube can be bent to clear. Or, the tube can be removed, weld up the hole and move it's location a few inches fore of the original location. A mini-starter (I went with the RobbMc one) really helps, too. I used Remflex gaskets, no leaks after a few thousand miles so far.
