"Corporate Strategies of the Automotive Manufacturers: An historical perspective on the automobile industry"

Published by U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1978

Has a lot of sales/financial/corporate strategy info on all. AMC starts at page 151. Lots of great financial info and insights into the company at the time. Even a section on government interactions, noting that AMC didn't have the resources to lobby congress like the big three, and concentrated on WI senators and congressmen for help.

An excerpt concerning the Pacer (pardon the odd type -- cut and paste from Google Books wasn't cooperative to editing):

For the next three years , AMC cars underwent facelifts with new grilles and new rear ends , and new interiors were offered but no new model was introduced until the Pacer in the spring of 1975. This car was originally designed as a wide , relatively heavy car that would offer luxury on the inside and a stable , big - car ride

on a small frame . However , encouraged by the initial broad appeal of the Pacer , AMC mistakenly decided not to market it as a luxury car but simply as a wide , small car .The Pacer found itself competing against the subcompacts and losing because of poorer fuel economy . In order to increase consumer appeal for its cars , AMC restyled

the Hornet with the result that the Concord emerged as a low - priced luxury model in 1978 . Consumer acceptance of this model has been good from AMC's standpoint .
