Filters were invented by the aftermarket in the 30s, not manufacturers. As the engines wereredesigned in the 50s full flow filters were added. I don't know when Ford or Chevy first had filters built into the engines, but for AMC it was 1956 with the then new 250 V-8. The sixes had optional partial flow filters until the new six was introduced in 1964, with the exception of the aluminum block 195.6 in 61 (all the AL block sixes had full flow filtration). Actually, the partial flow filter was standard starting around 1963, at least on most models. Might not have been on the base model American. The 195.6 was altered in 65 for a full flow filter. There was a change in the oil pump and block casting right where the oil pump bolts to the block.
