Hate to shock people but that new fangled LS engine came out in 97. Oil pump is crank driven off the snout. Dodge did the same on the 94 and later iron V10. |

Ok, are you guys talking about the oil filter for the original oil filter base, which mounts to the top area of the intake and in some cases cyl head and intake manifold? Because I've been searching for the part number for that type of oil filter, farna helped me out but I deleted the message without noticing I needed that info, I orderd the filter according to the part number in the first few messages in this thread but see you guys might be talking about a different type of oil filter since the filter is mounted in a different spot.....
I used the internet and searched the oil filter ph11 and I searched the dimensions of the oil filter, it was 5.14 (inches I assume) and was not sure if it seemed tall enough to be the same oil filter I have seen in numerous pictures of this filter near the intake manifold in it's little plate of a base.

Ok, the oil filter I was looking for to put on the optional original oil filter base is not the one in the previous post, when it came in I looked at it and saw right away it wouldn't work out, but, farna gave me a tip, "pb50", he also said I can pb50 cross reference interchange search and find many filters to use, so much help from nice guys around here geeze!

Yeah, I had a new ‘98 Trans Am with a 305HP LS1 5.7L V8, I didn’t like it compared to the 5.7L LT1 I had in a ‘96 Trans Am that I used as a trade-in. The LS1 didn’t have as much low-end grunt. Didn’t keep the ‘98 long, still wish I had that ‘96 though.

I'm working on a 1964 American with a 196 and it has a Fram PH11 mounted directly on the oil pump. Does this mean it has a 1965 engine in it? The numbers on the block are 6U9C16.

6U9C16 Engine code: 6 = year, 1964,1973 or 1986... but since this is a 196 has to be 64. U9 = I'm assuming "09", which would be September. The "U" is throwing everyone, should be two numbers here. C = 61-65 195.6 OHV, Iron block 16 = day (Sept. 16th) One thing you need to know about the engine plant -- it worked on CALENDAR YEAR instead of model year. All but a few early production 65 models got the 196 with the full flow oil filter. Model production started around August, so the engines would have been made starting then or at the first of September. You can't just bolt the full flow pump to the older block, so you don't have an early block with a later pump. There is an extra oil passage at the bottom of the full flow pump for return oil that isn't in the older block. It will pour oil on the ground unless blocked. Theoretically you can block off that passage with a steel plug or plate between block and pump and retain the pressure relief valve in the block. I forget if the pressure relief is retained with the full flow pump or not... I think it moved to the filter adapter, but the newer engines may use both. I don't know if just blocking that passage could lead to a filter over pressure if the filter gets clogged, would take a close look at the oiling circuit. |
