70 Javelin. There was no sign that the shell for the headliner was glued or otherwise adhered to the roof of the car. From all appearances, it was held in only by the trim, etc.
Yet I've heard of others who used a spray adhesive or some sort of glue to hold the thing up to the roof.

What was original?

There was no residue on the roof, and no sign that there had ever been any adhesive on the back of the headliner shell.
I have it in, held only by the trim and it seems fine (even though all the trim is not yet in place because the front and rear glass are not in place)
The headliner in my 68 also simply dropped out when I removed the trim and didn't appear to have ever been glued (although that was many years ago)

Bill
The trim should hold it in place.
The spray adhesive came into play when the fabric would fall off the shell and was used to "try" and stick it back on.

I recently redid the headliner with vinyl, removing the cloth covering I had there for a number of years.

I actually considered spraying adhesive on the roof the hold the shell in place in the when the windows are open, the headliner comes down a fair amount from the wind.  The shell itself isn't torn or cracked, but it has enough "give"
to it that it folds a bit.

Also, I noted spray adhesive on the roof that I know that I did not put there, and when I took out the headliner originally, it still had the original vinyl.  Possible that someone tried to keep the headliner up there in the past though.

My 68 Javelin did not have any glue holding the headliner to the roof when I recovered it, nor did put any up there to hold it in place.  I drive the car with the windows down always and it stays just fine.

My 70 did not have any glue above the headliner. I was able to reskin the fiberglass shell with new foam backed cloth with no further problem.

Thumbs%20Up
It's up, stable, not bouncy or loose, and not "glued" to the roof.
thanks.
With the glass in, I can now finish the interior.
