I want to pick up a compact spare from a wrecking yard to use whenever I take my Javelins on trips. Not the space saver canister type that came with our cars, but the later compact spares that already have air in them. I know many cars have the same bolt pattern, but I'm thinking more about brake caliper clearance. Anyone else tried this and know which models I should look for? Both my cars have front discs.

I've used a Jeep XJ compact spare and a Ford Crown Vic compact spare. Both fit fine. Right now I'm using a Weld Drag Lite 15x4" wheel with a 195/80R15 tire on it. Clears everything (I have 79 Spirit front discs). Sort of a "roll your own" space saver, but the tire will hold up better. Main reason for the Weld wheel is it has dual patterns (5x4.5 AMC/Ford/Chrysler) and 5x4.75 (old Chevy). I have a Jag IRS and it uses the 4x4.75" pattern. I run the same wheels on the car in 15x7 w/205/70R15 tires with 5.5" back spacing so I didn't have to narrow the rear axle -- use a 1" spacer on the fronts so I can use the same wheel all the way around.

I use one from a Caravan, place was full of them and I think it was $5 at the time. Same 5x4.5" and 26" diameter which is close enough for a spare for my 25.7" tires.
They are so thin you don't have to be concerned about backspacing or drum/rotor clearances.

Find a space saver from a Ford Crown Victoria. They have space savers on 16" wheels. I scrounged a couple of local yards and found 4 (for $9.99 each) that I use to move cars around the shop. They're fairly easy to find on junkyard taxis and cop cars. Bob tufcj

I have a Crown Vic spare for my Hornet with drum brakes...fits the rears, but doesn't fit the front drum....I know you have discs...just cautioning others. (I figure if I had a flat in front, I could put this on the rear, and move that rear wheel up front.)

I had my Crown Vic space savers on a 67 Ambassador (trunnions, drum brakes) just to get it on a trailer. Seemed to roll OK, didn't drive it though. Bob tufcj
