Can't for the life of me figure out how the metal part of the fuel return (#12 below) line is supposed to mount to the engine now that I have the correct fuel filter. It was hanging loose in the engine bay and only connected by rubber hose to the pipe running to the tank previously

This is a picture from a Jeep Forum for a 79 258:

Sorry, it's confusing how they wrote the post. This is a picture of the 82 CJ5 Laredo 258 and the original post title was for a 79 with the rubber return line.

I did find that picture, couldn’t make that option work. Difficult when you might not have other things in the correct location either and the pipe is possibly modified from original.

I have eliminated the pipe for now and just run a rubber hose from the filter to the steel return pipe on the frame rail. Manual states that “some” vehicles will have an inline check valve, which I don’t have either, unsure if it’s needed or not.

My 75 Pacer with a 258 also has the correct filter with a return line to the tank.  The return line from the filter is a hose about six inches long connected to a curved hard line that floats in air connected to a longer hose which connects to the return line at a junction with the hard line back to the tank.  The junction is down on our (American) driver side of the car.  Joe
