Ok, so let me try to explain this as best I can.
The trans has maybe 5 miles on it since it's rebuild. It has a Fairbanks shift kit in it with the Street/Strip modifications. It has a billet rear servo. It has a Hughes 2500 stall converter, and Lokar kickdown linkage, which is properly set up. The trans has a deep pan on it with the extension to make the pickup the proper height. The trans also has the proper amount of fluid in it. I have a Kilduff Machine shifter with B&M shift cable on it and everything appears to be working correctly with that, as well. Here's my problems. 1. When put in drive, the car starts in 3rd gear. It also doesn't shift down automatically when in drive as I slow down. 2. 1st gear and reverse seem to need a little extra throttle to get things moving. There's little to no "creep" in those gears when there typically would be. Here's some other important info. First of all, I know what a higher stall converter feels like, and I'm fairly certain it's not the converter. Secondly, I can shift the trans manually in all gears and it seems to work ok. 3rd takes a second to engage when shifted manually, but that could be because of low wheel speed I'm thinking. Please share your ideas on what the problem could be. I have my theories, but I'll wait to share them until I get some other ideas. |

The no shifting down sounds like the governor. The delayed shifts sounds like an internal issue.

I agree with FSjunkie. It sounds like there's a piece of dirt or something stuck in the governor. Fortunately it's easy to take the tail housing off and clean it out. You might have to get a gauge and check the pressures in it.

You need a book and a pressure gauge. You need to know what line pressure and governor pressure is. Go back and look at shift kit instructions, some strip type instructions include optional mods for a manual valve body. If you have correct line pressure I would guess the slippage feel you get is the converter.

I'm thinking it's a governor issue as well. I may not have explained the sluggishness very well though in first and reverse. It goes into gear almost instantly--it just needs more throttle than necessary to move. It feels like it's low on fluid, but it's not. |
