Does anyone know the diameter of the perch shaft and the ID of the tubing that the bushings go in?

Thanks,
Jim

The shaft on my car measures .849.

Another option that some of us have done is to turn down the perch shaft to 5/8" and use Ride-Tech coil over shocks with either Viking or QA1 springs.  Turning the bar down allows it to fit through the bottom mount of the Ride-Tech shock.  Follow the link and scroll down that page for more details on how forum member DMack did this:

You can get the spring seat bushings (upgraded version) from Rare Parts Suspension!! Much better piece then OE!!

This is their description.
  • High Performance all Steel design
  • Greasable with seals to eliminate contamination
  • Eliminates original rubber design that was prone to failure
  • Direct replacement
  • Made in USA

I tried to copy and paste the image of them, but it didn't work for me.

It's called Spring Seat Bushing, and it's the bushing and metal sleeve and bar that go into the control arm.
It's in section 2 of this page:

74 Hornet Hatchback X twins (since 1977)
62 American Convertible (still worth the $50 I spent in 1973!) AMCRC #513, AMO #384

The sad thing is those were made at the Tenneco-Monroe-Clevite Elastomers plant in Mexico.
As of 2017 they had about 500 in inventory and I tried my best to buy all of them but was not successful.  I assume that the inventory is depleted now and with the demand as low as it is, they probably won't set up to make another run.

Thanks for all the links and discussion. I was hoping for a low cost solution. I found a site that sells all kinds of bushings. It looks like the diameter of the shaft is .849". I wish I knew the I.D of of the tube the bushings need to fit in. I don't hae the car apart yet to find this out myself.

I have one of those assembly's torn apart with the bushings out. It's not close to my house though, I could get it this weekend and take pictures and measure it and post it if you would like.

Just remembered that I had a couple of old spring perches, still sitting in the BBQ where I burned the rubber bushings out of them, lol.  The inside diameter of the bushing shell is 1.22".  I'm guessing 1-7/32" or 31 mm will probably be the closest bushing size you'll find.
