The transmission in my 1970 Hornet does not shift from first into second until I get to about 40 mph. I can shift it to second manually and it seems to work OK after that. Any thoughts on what may be going on? Thanks.

Automatic transmission i assume?

What position are you putting the shift lever? The shift pattern should be

P R N D2  D1  L

You should be using D1 (starts in low, uses all three gears) or D2 (starts off in intermediate, uses top two gears only). L is low only.

If your shifter is worn, likely, shift all the way to the bottom/last detent; that's L. Then bump up one. That's D1.

If the above is known to you or correct, then you need to fix the following before you do any driving, as you could ruin the transmission in short order:

** If this is a vacuum-modulator car, make sure the hose and line from intake manifold vacuum down to the modulator thingie on the back of the trans is in place and not leaking. And not clogged. Make sure you have vacuum at the trans end! If you do, and it won't upshift, the modulator is probably bad. There's a diaphragm in there that don't live forever.

** If your trans uses a shift cable ("throttle cable") make sure that's connected and adjusted properly. That's in the TSM but ask here if you get stuck.

Both of the two are the methods used by variations of that transmission, the borg warner T35. Its critical feedback, it tells the transmission how to shift. With it not working you will do damage.

Also this transmission is fussy about fluid level. It's checked warmed up, after driving, parked dead level, engine running, and in NEUTRAL not PARK! Usually underfull causes "skipping", usually overfull makes a huge mess. ADjust 4 - 8 ounces at a time, no more, then drive, repeat.

They are fine transmissions, even given their age. Still rebuildable, they are reasonably efficient too. Change the fluid every 2 - 4 years no matter what anyone says, not changing fluid is harmful.
