I’ve had fuel gauges that move when you ground them or even peg out, but they were wildly inaccurate or non-linear when using either precision resistors or a decade box.

That's a good thought about the wire length and guage. I didn't really consider that. I could run the test again and check the Ohms with the wire hooked up. As fo rthe temp gauge, It seems to move but I haven't really tested it or run the car for too long to know it it is up to temp. But i can ground that out to see.
Looks like I might be pulling the gauge cluster again and do some cleaning. Thanks for the thoughts, Jim

Success! I have a fuel guage. I took out the cluster and removed the fuel and temp gauges and cleaned all points of contact. One thing I noticed was that all the "nuts" holding the guages on were only finder tight. So after cleaning and reassembly, everythign works.
Thanks for everyones input and help. No on to why I don't have air flow through the heater core. Jim

I had the same problem on my 1973 Ambassador a few weeks ago. The fuel gauge magically stopped working completely. It stayed on E all the time. The nuts on the back side had worked loose.
