I've got a 73 Javelin base with 304 motor. I would like to upgrade to bigger engine. Is the 343 and the 360 compatible with the current setup that I have or are modifications needed? (automatic trans)

360, yes -- 343, no. The crankshaft flange changed in 1972 when AMC switched to Chrysler automatic transmission (from 71 and earlier Borg Warner autos). So any 72 and later engine will bolt right in. 304s used a 998, 360s a 727. The 998 will be fine behind a stock to mild 360 if you install a shift kit and maybe a bigger trans cooler. The shift kit (a towing or RV type will work fine) tightens up the shifts and reduces slipping between gears, which will increase the life of the trans as well as make it shift firmer. That's the minimum I'd do (shift kit and bigger cooler). There are other upgrades that can be made to the 998, but all others I know of require rebuilding the trans.
