    Posted: Aug/07/2022 at 5:12pm

Getting close to firing up my latest 68 project. I am thinking of putting an inline Maxi fuse holder in place of the fusible link. Probably just short term until it is running well and I am comfortable with everything. I am thinking of this just in case there is some unknown electrical issue that would blow the fusible link that it would be cheaper to replace a blown fuse. FYI, the car has all harnesses new from M&H, and new starter, alternator, and voltage regulator.   The big question is what amp rating fuse to use? 30, 40 amp??  Thanks for any insight. Wink

Since all the juice runs through the oil/amp gauge, I'd go for a 40 amp fuse. Good luck!

Have lots of fuses in the glove box along with a flash light.

This is a decent discussion about fusible links:

A 35A alternator should have a 35A or 40A fuse.  Are the fusible links NLA?

Steve, the fusible links are available at about $20 a pop. This car was bought with no engine and had several melted harness connectors at the alternator. I have all new M&H harnesses, alt, and starter. I just thought for making final connections and initial start up, IF there is some unknown elec issue, it would be cheaper to replace a fuse if need be. Then put the fusible link in after everything settles in.

Fusible links aren't for overload, they're for protection from damage in crashes etc that would start a fire.

Another reason to use them is that in any electrical system (aerospace, auto, phone, stereo) connectors are by far the most unreliable component. Especially for something as mission critical as ignition I'd stick with crimped fusible link on the harness.
