Should have clarified. Keep all your accessories, pulleys and brackets from the 72 304 as they will bolt up to any 72+ 360 with no alignment issues. You may have to swap the water pump from the 304 to the 360, not an issue. And bigbad69 also makes the point that any replacement engine has to keep it's damper and flex plate/flywheel as AMC's are externally balanced.
Usually Jeep 360's are more plentiful to find as donors, at least in this area.

Be careful.  I have a 72 304. 1973 and newer usually has the 4 bolt balancer.   Its been my experience that 1972 is the last year for the 3 bolt balancer.  Ive heard that late 1972 has the 4 bolt balancer but I haven't seen one.

Careful with that one. There a running change with dampers, pulleys and water pumps around that time. The accessories from a later engine may not bolt up.

Always keep the damper and flywheel with the engine to maintain proper balance.
from a 304 to a 360?   I did and it vibrated.. lesson learned.

You keep the 304 damper and flex plate/flywheel with the 304 and 360 damper and flex plate/flywheel with the 360. Did not state to mix and match these.
The parts book has the 72 3 or 4 bolt dampers being interchangeable, assuming this means the pulleys align to everything 72+. Have not personally run into any issues with 72+ accessory parts issues if keeping all the current engine accessory parts and transferring them to the new engine.
This includes Jeeps.
Issues arise if moving accessory parts from 71- to 72+ or are missing parts IME.
