Although I haven't done a VIN search, I think my car was originally a California car.
It has the red engine and a California Emissions sticker.
Not sure that it means a lot but I tell everyone that it makes my Javelin a little more special.

I have a '72 California car too,  Don't see too many of them.

I believe from late '72 on there were no steering stops attached to the lower control arm end of the strut rod.  You are correct that after that time AMC used the slightly extended angled strut rod end at the lower control arm side.  Each strut rod type attached the same way with two nuts and bolts at the lower control arm.  I've seen the angled strut rod ends without steering stops attaching to the lower control arms on Hornets and Grelins and Concords after late '72 as well.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

My '72 made in November '71 also has the pointy strut rods instead of steering stops.

Learned a valuable lesson today and thought I'd pass it along.
When installing the center steering linkage, It's important not to put it in backwards.
I know this probably is a surprise. Imagine my shock .Wacko
