You could check the head casting number easily, by taking a valve cover off, that would give an idea of its origins, not conclusive, but likely the original heads, and therefore give a date range. ie. number ending in 291C - 70-71, 090 - 73, 502 - 74, 503 - 75-77,  475 - `78, etc.

Depending on what you're trying to figure out, the distributor should have a part number stamped around the perimeter below the cap.

As Cruzer stated earlier,  and from your picture it looks like the access port is on the side of the fitting, maybe it was for  hood clearance?
