Got one now and it sticks up about 18" when retracted.  I'm interested in something that will be closer to flush when retracted.  Probably something out there that will work but hadn't looked yet because I was focused on an automatic type.

I am referring to fully retractable manual antennas. They are readily available. Not hard to find at all.

The 72 up AMC manual retractable is the way to go assuming you can find one.
Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.

I thought the retractables were a 72 only item?

Could be. I can’t remember what antenna my 73 Hornet 360 hatchback had. I bought the car new but only had it about 5 months.

My 71 and 73 Javelins were retracable. The odd one that I remember was from my 65 Riviera, it looked like a half mast, but had electric extension.

Does anyone have any links to any replacement retractable antennas masts, that will work with original cowl mounting and base? Still looking for cheap attractive replacement for 1968 AMX antenna mast! Let me know you all

Maybe if you’re lucky you’ll be able to find a good used genuine AMC fully retractable (but manual) antenna. These were used in the early to mid 70s models. New ones, when they pop up for sales, go for an arm and a leg.
